Alloy wheels

Featured Replies

Hello,

Recently bought new alloys to replace the 16Inch Škoda ones.

can anyone advise wether I need to take it somewhere to get any pressure sensors swapped?

heard Chinese whispers about having the tyre pressure light coming on if not fitted or swapped with the tyre pressure sensor in the current alloys.

Certainly.

Unless your vehicle actually tells you tyre pressures in each wheel, it doesn't have direct TPMS, so there are no sensors to swap.

so for my own clarification I can swap the alloys and now warnings should come up except the initial type pressure warning due to swapping the alloys but it should not and will not reoccur?

Yes, these new wheels should behave in the same way as the originals, just check/adjust the pressures after they are fitted, then reset the TPMS and all should be okay.

If the wheels and tyres and tyre pressure are about the same then I doubt you'll even get any TPMS warning but do check a;; the tyres pressure are correct (when 'cold') and reset as suggested already.  Do not rely on the TPMS to tell you about your tyres pressures, always check with a reliable tyre pressure gauge, as the TMPS seems to have quite wide parameters in my wife's experience of getting a flat tyre.

With experience of more than 6 slow punctures, my TPMS consistently flags at approx. 0.5 bar drop. At that pressure (on 16s) the excess sidewall bulge is not that obvious, so better to check pressures with a reliable gauge.

Thanks, but 0.5 bar is 7.25psi (according to Google) which is 24% of 30 psi, a 24% drop in tyre pressure which is substantial and will have an effect on the tyre and the car systems the tyre effects such as braking, steering and suspension.  Admittedly the electronic aids on the car will deal with a certain amount of these effects but they can't overcome physics (something modern drivers should always be aware of and nothing think that cars have magic buttons and settings that can always sort everything for them).

I have a feeling that the parameters for this (and other stuff) can be as wide as 25% which is why the human drivers and passengers can sometimes detect things before any error messages or warning lights and  error codes.  Someone with VCDS or other or the knowledge may know the actual margin before the TMPS warning is triggered on the Fabia Mk3 TMPS.  My wife said she knew there was something wrong before the car gave a TMPS warning for the tyre going flat (decades of being a passenger and driving British "classic" cars have taught her about how a car feels and various noises from it, she's better at identifying the sounds than me but that's not saying a lot).

I agree that the pressure drop is substantial - the point I was attempting to make was that the pressure loss is not obvious with a visual check, and solely relying on the indirect TPMS to confirm tyre pressures is ill-advised.

correction

The System came about when there were Run Flat Tyres getting fitted an BMW / MINI drivers could not recognise a blow out.

To see just when your particular car warns of Circumference / Total Diameter change from being set try after setting letting a tyre down a little try 5 psi first.

Actually the TPMS can warn when a tyres circumference / total diameter gets greater.

An over heating brake / hub / wheel expanding the tyre.  Bearing going etc. Tyre inflates more heated up.

Sorry, yes totally agree with this, I often think the tyres might be low in pressure by the look of the sidewalls but they're fine when checked with a reliable pressure gauge.

Yes you'll probably remember a recent thread where overinflated tyres were the cause of TMPS warnings.  Like other issues and warnings on the car a quick driver's maintenance check can sort them and often very easily, with little or no expense and hassle.  Even better professionals can be chasing their tails and doing surplus checks and diagnosis after neglecting/forgetting to do first basic checks or failing to RTM.
