Rowers - can a set of rowing (sculling) blades fit in the Octavia estate?

Featured Replies

Anyone managed this, and if so, how did you achieve it?

Cheers

Do they have to be inside or can they be mounted on the roof?

How long are they?

You can fit items up to 3m long inside an Octavia hatch with no difficulty.

It would be better if I could get them inside the car

It's the estate I'm looking to buy...

Cheers

I do need to ask out of interest.

What are the cars that others are carrying them inside?

Sculling oars are 9 ft 6 inch...   so 2.895m.

I'd therefore suggest  the answer is yes just about if they can be placed through to the front passenger seat.

However, why don't you take one down to your friendly local Skoda dealer and try them?

Sculling blades are indeed ~2.89m
Good idea, cheers

My normal trick for moving long stuff like that is lift the passenger headrest and use the gap between the rods to stop them flying around the inside of the car. I've had 2.4m lengths of timber in a mk2 hatch enough times, so you should be alright.

Up to 3m resting on the dashboard for the estate, use padding in front to protect the windscreen from emergency braking.

You can load 3m long stuff in my case metal stud wall sections up to about 10cm high, 60cm wide before the rake of the screen reduces the length.

If space is super tight, you might want to consider a Superb Estate for your oars.  They are a bit longer and would accomodate the rowing equipment far better.

Thanks guys, looks like they'll fit.

As for the Superb, that's a fair bit bigger than the Octavia, plus there'snot a vRS version?

Unless I do a PistonHeads Sleeper version

oh yes, there is.  It just isn't called a VRS.  If you can get hold of a TDI Bi-Turbo 250bhp version, they are definately quick.  You will even see the recent articles of breathed upon TSI cars making 500bhp, so they are out there.

Typically, you are looking for a TSI Superb 4x4 version and ideally an Lauren and Klement version too.  A quick Autotrader search showed the following:

Wow, I hadn't heard of that model...
Bit over my budget though, and I'm looking for a soot chucker

I,ve had 3m pipes in mine. One end in the passenger footwell and then slightly diagonally between the front seats and on top of the rear backrest. Tied down with  a seatbelt.

I got 3 no. 3m lengths of overflow pipe in my estate yesterday, through the ski hatch, into the passenger footwell and there was around 200mm of "slack" to the end of the boot.

The Estate and Hatchback both use the same floor plan. There is more space in the boot of an Estate only in height.

That's interesting, thanks. I didn't know that
I would fit a dog cage 'Medium') in the rear, so guessing the estate would fit the bill better?

I'm wondering if that's a misprint - the length of the hatch trunk is shown as being 34mm longer than the combi.

It makes sense as the hatchback at the point of measurement only has a single sheet of pressed steel behind it, the estate has a thick rear door with trim panel which intrudes inside.

I can't help with sculling blades but am willing to attest to the fact that you can get 1.8m skis in an Octy Estate behind the front seats.  Or you can also get 4"x4" x 8' fence posts in if you skimmy them in over the front seat, or you can also fit in 50 x 6' x 3" fence posts or a dining table and 4 chairs + 2 carvers.  Add a top box and trailer and the sky's the limit!!  In fact it's a standing joke in my house that the answer to any question on how to get x taken to y is 'put it in the Octavia' LOL!
