The notchy gear box on my mark II Octavia vRS

Featured Replies

I have noticed that the gear box on my new car is more notchy and cumbersome than I first thought. It hasn't changed much since I bought it but I'm sure that when I had a test drive, the gear box was much better and quite slick.

Sometimes I have to really force it into gear. 1st and 2nd are usually fine but I struggle with 5th and 6th in particular which makes it difficult to manage speed control on motorways if you have to go from 40 - 70+ every so often. If the car is in neutral (which it is when coasting) and I want a quick change to 6th gear, I have to perform the gear maneuver quickly if I want to ensure it doesn't get stuck.

Have any of you experienced a similar problem with the vRS gear box or is it something I should have checked?

Gear box is slightly notchy and occasionely reverse and first require a double clutch but 5th and 6th have caused no probs, do find changing smoothly into 2nd very hard at higher acceleration causing SWMBO to shout at me for treating her baby rough

I had a slight problem with 1st and 2nd - complained to the dealer and they adjusted it nice and slick.

I believe that the adjustment instructions on dieselgeek.com apply pretty well to the standard setup but I may be wrong (I often am.....)

Since yours is new, why not ask the dealer to take a look at the shifting - a new car shouldn't be anything but fairly smooth.

Is coasting in neutral at motorway speeds a good idea? Does that have any adverse effect on the drivetrain in any way?

Mines a little notchy but nothing to worry about.

Mine was very notchy from 2-3. This has now gone away after 2500 miles.

I've booked my car in for a check up in two weeks so they will take a look at it. I may just be a little fussy over it but there's no harm in having it looked at.

Thanks guys.

5th and 6th were fairly notchy initially to the point of scrunching 5th alot but all is well after 2200 miles. (Probably worn those horrid tooth things off the cogs:rofl: ).
