Scala rear reversing camera retrofit

Featured Replies

Managed to retrofit the a reverse camera to my Scala the other day, cost just under £50 with delivery from Aliexpress. No coding required, worked straight away when selecting reverse gear.

Most difficult part was removing the old handle and feeding the wire through the rubber conductor in to the boot.

I’ve added some photos which may help anyone else attempting to do this. I routed my wire behind the glovebox, up the pillar and over the top of passenger side doors. The communication and general body repairs (interior) are needed to help you remove the entertainment system and boot panels (found in this forum)

Excellent,  just what I need.   I have just purchased a base level Scala SE and tips like this are perfect.   I'll be on Aliexpress in a sec. Thanks again,  Robert

Thanks Joe for sharing. Can you be more specific in how you installed the camera.

Did you connect it behind the screen? How was connecting?

Was it easy to take the screen out?

Why is the glove compartment open what did you do there?

How did you feed the cable from the back to the front?

How did you expose the back to get to where you connected the camera?

Was it plug and play? Did you have any issues after installing?

Any other useful information will help. I have ordered the camera and would like help with installation.

Did you have a guide? Any videos?

Thanks in advance.

Did you connect it behind the screen? Yes the cable fits in the space behind the screen.

How was connecting? It was just unplugging the existing cable, fit the new one in and connect the original cable back in to the new. There’s a lever catch to lock/release it in place. The camera cable requires a firm push.

Was it easy to take the screen out? The removal tools were included, download the Skoda communication repair guide for step by step instructions and diagrams. See https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/485397-scala-workshop-manuals/

Why is the glove compartment open what did you do there? I fed the cable from the centre, behind the screen, behind the glove compartment and up the passenger window screen pillar.

How did you feed the cable from the back to the front? Just need to push the cable under the fabric of the window screen pillars and over the top of the doors. Check out guides for installing dashcams and see how they route the wires.

How did you expose the back to get to where you connected the camera? See the Skoda interior repair guide for diagrams and instructions to remove the boot panel. See https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/485397-scala-workshop-manuals/

Was it plug and play? Yep, no programming was needed, this kit simply worked out of the box. Other kits or using original OEM / Skoda equipment may be different.

Did you have any issues after installing? Since installing there has only been a couple of times where it has said “Camera Unavailable” but after leaving reverse gear and going back it works again.

Did you have a guide? Any videos? The Skoda manuals help a lot with the removal of the entertainment system and boot panel. I also read the following post for some tips https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/485897-how-to-reverse-camera-fitting-guide/

Hope this helps, it took me several hours to install, at one point I m took a break as I couldn’t remove the clips on the existing boot handle, I managed to eventually remove it later on after a lot of frustration.

At the beginning I tested it all worked before routing the cable through the car. Just remember to close the boot as the camera is disabled if the boot is open.

Wow, what an excellent, detailed and prompt response! Lot's of kudos to you. I have been hesitant to go down that route but after this I am rather more confident. Just didn't want to fuss around my scala when it still only has 200 miles on the clock.

Amazing. Thanks Joe

@Joe692 Did yours have parking sensors fitted ex-factory and did they still work?

I have just fitted this kit to a 2024 Scala and camera works fine. However, the parking sensors seem to be disabled both front and rear.

I only have the rear sensors and they continued to work after fitting the camera.

In my original post you can see the top down car image and sensors status overlayed on the camera image. I think you can close the camera image and it goes full screen on the sensor status page.

Maybe try removing and reinstalling the cable harness or checking the fuses?

All working OK. I removed camera after tested it working correctly as I don't have time at moment to fully fit with cable. System recognised camera not there anymore so had to do a temporary refit with camera packed into glovebox.

Panic over - for the time being!

Finally had time to install today. Feeding the wiring through the roof and the tailgate rubber connectors is not really an issue as long as you have an electricians cable lead or something similar. as you say, the hardest bit is getting the old boot switch out of its mounting. Took me about half an hour, even then a small part snapped off of it. This bit would have been much easier with 2 people!

All in all, just under 2 and 1/2 hrs. But all is good, and for under £40, who could complain.

Sorry, late to the thread, but where does the actual camera go, it’s not clear from the pics? Thanks

It's built into the tailgate handle. When you get the kit from Aliexpress, you get a new handle assembly. You just have to remove the old one and fit the replacement - a lot easier than it sounds to get the existing one out!

Ah OK, thanks!

Presume this works with an automatic in exactly the same way? ie no different wiring required etc?

I can't see a reason why not. The system is only looking for a reverse signal on the CAN Bus

👍 ok cheers

Hi all, im interested in this retrofit with the Skoda Sala 2021. How i can check that it will fit 100% with the link from aliexpress on the first post? This is my VIN: TMBER6NW7Mxxxxxxxx
When i run compatibility check on the https://compatibilitylist.skoda-auto.com/ it says /20/2020 so i guess MY is 20

Vin and image containing it removed for data protection. Please don’t publish information that could be used for illegal practices such as vehicle cloning.

If you follow the instructions as given by Joe692 above it should be fine. As long as yours has the screen as shown in his pictures then the only thing you need to confirm before you order is that the profile of the rear boot handle is correct for the unit you have on the car. I would think that it is the same as mine was (2023 model) which was with Camera B.

Yes it is a bolero same as on pictures, i will check the boot handle thanks for headsup!

No coding needed for you? As mentioned above. Also i dont see any fuse connections and fuse needed in descriptions?

As I said in my earlier post, no coding required. There are no fuses, just unplug the cable to the display unit and plug the new bit in between. Hardest part is getting boot handle out as it is clipped on at least 3 sides (maybe 4, can't fully remember) but I ended up breaking the clips off old one. I fed the cable from back to front through head lining and down A post. If in doubt, send them the car details for confirmation.

Thank you for details. Good day!

Hi all, help needed.

I have issues getting camera to work. I ordered the one from the first post. (B type)

When i first connected camera, it wasnt recognized.

Than i unplugged and plugged again, and bolero restarted, and camera started to work. But (sad face) the image is black and white, and there is no guidelines shown.

To note: i did not touch coding at that moment. Just plug and thats it.

After that i try to do some codings via obdeleven to see why is b/w and why there is no lines.

No luck:

What i have tryed:

Control unit: 19 Gateway

Name: Installation list, specified installations

Values:

Camera System Rear View:

Old value: Not coded

New value: coded

Long coding

Control unit: 76 Parking Assistance

Values:

Camera type:

Old value: not installed

New value: Rearview camera

Adaptation

Control unit: 5F Multimedia

Name: Vehicle function list BAP

Values:

VPS_0x0B_msg_bus:

Old value: Not activated

New value: Terminal 15

Adaptation

Control unit: 5F Multimedia

Name: Vehicle function list BAP

Values:

VPS_0x0B:

Old value: Not activated

New value: activated

When i add camera to the gateway, the 6c unit shows. But its black and i cannot access it to code it further.

I get this errors also:

B110231 - Rearview camera no signal

U111000 - Function restriction due to communication interruption

Please help

Sorry to hear that. There were no issues on my install except as you stated at the beginning, I had to turn the media off and restart (as suggested in the instructions - from memory). I don't have OBD11 to go in and change settings so cannot advise on what you experienced.

Did you send the details of the car to the vendor before ordering so that they can double check that the one you were ordering was correct?

If it was correct and doesn't function I would suggest that you contact them and explain the situation and see if they can guide you in resolving the problem. Apparently they are quick in responding and have experience in these types of fault issues.

Hope you get some response from the vendor or someone else on here can help you.

Hi, i did not, but when i was ordering i checked about MIB3 unit and Scala, and it said on the info that it supports Basic MIB3, that i hope i have.

I contacted the seller with video as they requested. And they do respond fast.

I will update you guys when i get more info, so i can help others with same issue.

Thank you

Edit: i should have, as i have MEN3_EU_SK370
