Rhythmic humming noise at about 62mph which gets higher pitched as you go on.

Hi all,

Figured I'd consult the forums as I'm not really sure where to look or what could be causing this.

Just picked up myself a nice 2013 plate MK2 SE and I'm really pleased with it. It's my first time with a VAG car so I'm relatively new to them.

Everything is great with the car, its only on 97k so I am optimistic for many years of driving, however I do seem to have a strange issue when I'm travelling at highway speeds.

At around 62mph you can hear it come in, it's the distinct rhythmic hum, sort of like a voooom...... voooom....... vooooom, that I believe is coming from my rear left. However it seems to just reverberate around the car.  It's not loud loud, but definitely annoying now that I've noticed it.

It's most noticeable at around 69-70 mph (typical as thats the speed limit), and you can feel a slight vibration around this speed that coincides with the hum. However I can only feel it in the foot rest, the steering wheel gives absolutely nothing at all and is silky smooth.

I've tried the following but to no fix yet:

I've replaced all left hand side wheel bearings as I believe its definitely the left hand side.

I've rotated my tires around to see if the noise moves, it does not.

Tyre pressures are correct

I've had a full alignment to see if that was out and a few tiny tweaks but again no fix.

I had my front two tyres replaced as I could tell the front left had stepped. So there are fresh tyres on the front and the rears have good tread and no sign of saw toothing.

When you get past about 72 mph, the vibration seems to stops but the hum seems to get higher pitched. To the point you can barely hear it, but it is there still. Just higher pitched.

As you slow down you can feel the vibration through the foot rest again around 70 and as you get below 62 mph. It's gone. Can't hear anything at all, or feel anything and its lovely an quiet.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has had something similar or is just a thing with these cars? Or is there definitely going to be a problem.

Many thanks all!

@JoeSpencer99 - Sorry mate, you've tried everything I could suggest.

I had that on my 2000 VW Passat 4Motion when it was maybe 10 years old, 70,000 miles, VW main dealer tech said "if it was me I'd replace both sides" after confirming that it was front wheel bearing issue, I'm not sure that I could work out which end the noise was coming from, so that sorted out my problem and was exactly what I had asked the service desk to get done if it was a wheel bearing - ie do both sides.

My wife's 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI 110PS started doing that when it was maybe 7.5 years old, 40,000 miles(maybe), I bought a tool to do that job and once again played safe and bought and replaced both front wheel bearings.

I know that you have thought that you had definitely worked out which side it was coming from, but maybe a better plan would have been to get both sides from the heavy end replaced first, in the case of my wife's 2015 VW Polo, it looked like there had been water ingress into the front RHS wheel bearing, though I couldn't detect any roughness from either of the removed bearings.

Yes, I suppose I could get the right hand side done to just tick it off the list. However it'll need to wait as it cost me £270 for the left hand sides and will cost me the same for the right hand sides!

Just does seem very odd to me, I will continue my search. I am optimistic i'll figure it out as I really like the car, just a shame as soon as i've purchased it i've got this issue.
