Power Feed for Dashcam

Featured Replies

The Kamiq manual suggests a handy USB power feed up by the rear view mirror.

I cannot see a USB socket anywhere in that area. It is possible I am being dim or it is possible the "feature" has been deleted. Anybody know for sure?

The usb port beside the mirror is part of the £355 charging package option that includes wireless phone charging and the usb port beside the mirror.

Take it from the fusebox below right of steering wheel, using a fuse outlet which is controlled by the ignition.  This may mean a workshop job depending on your experience.

That will be the route I'll adopt since I failed to pay for the £355 "upgrade"  (Unless I find that the power feed is already in the mirror housing!) 😄

Also just a little note, I had to declare my front/rear dashcam as a mod when I opted to hardwire it in, just an FYI for your insurance to be 100%

Hi.

If you have any issues with insurance for a hardwired dash cam then please feel free to drop me a line.

A number of our insurance schemes offer premium discounts for the fitment of an HD dash cam.

Regards,

Dan.

This is news that I just had to check was correct information .........

Seems crazy to 'have' to declare it but yes, deemed a 'Mod', as you say.

At least it will likely get your insurance premium reduced some. :)

I wired mine to one of the USB ports

Yeah I was surprised aswell, usually on previous cars I had them plugged into the cigarette lighter, but for the Kamiq for no reason just fancied it hard wired in, fit and forget. Then just happened to come across an article saying hardwired dashcams have to be declared as a mod, so immediately updated my insurance. Don't want any potential claim to be disregarded due to a tiny little detail like that.

Plugging in via the USB ports sounds good, the ports thankfully are quite close to the main dash so shouldnt see much wiring.

I use my mobile with a 64GB micro SD card in it.

It is only an old (2016) galaxy A5 but it works great. Easy to crop the video to save but just delete it if I do not need to save anything, AND i have the video to hand should I need it immediately.

I drilled the fitting into the roof lining on the (now sold) Octavia, just beside the glasses holder and it worked well.

I have a (possibly) temporary fitting secured to my sun visor in my newer car (fitted through the clip holder) but again, it works great with good vision and as it is just below the roof line it is well out of the sun so will not overheat.

I say possibly temporary as it may fly off if I crash though  Lol........ Lets hope not, eh. ............. It is reasonably secure to be fair.

Just to say I had same misgivings re insurers and a permanently (powered) dash am. I’m with Aviva and checking with them the were happy and said they treated it as an accessory. I have carefully saved the confirming email.

Wired mine to the obd port which provides a permanent live to monitor any interference whilst parked.
