Sorry to be asking such a simple question!

I currently have AvonZV7 90V XL's fitted but they have cracks on the side walls and in the tread.  They are about 5 years old with plenty of tread but I only do low mileage so I need to change them for safety.

Wheel size is 215/45R16 and the ones I've been looking at are the Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance 2, would these ok?  What speed rating for this car should I be looking at?  Is V rating overkill?  I rarely do any motorway driving now and it's usually just me and the Mrs in the car with shopping.

Thanks :)

@zom414 Get round tyres; Rudolf Uhlenhaut tried square ones on a Mercedes GP car but the drivers complained about too much vibration! ;)

I would stick with the 90V load and speed rating, personally I'll be changing to All Season tyres when my current set need changing (which will be soon).

I had two Avon ZT7, 185/60R15 84H tyres put on my wife's 2015 Fabia in June 2020, and another two a couple of years later, the first set only lasted 3 years and 23k-miles before they had bad radial cracking on the unseen inboard side and had to be replaced, the two have seemed fine so far 2.5 years and  22k-miles later.

They were replaced by Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance which seem fine, I would have considered All-season tyres if we'd needed four.

How the tyres work out in your size might be different.

I can say I'd avoid Nexen N blue (HD plus) as fitted from factory and our first distress of two, after a right-off puncture of one of the factory tyres.

If you are changing the set of four you could have a look/search at the all-seasons posts and recommendations on this forum of perhaps Fabia Mk3.

Good luck.

Go with all season tyres, seem to be less prone to cracking because they can tolerate being used from very cold, although it might simply be the compound is not as brittle on cold days.

Your choice might depend on availability in size you require, and price, consider any of the following:

Bridgestone Turanza all season 6

Continental all season contact 2

Michelin cross climate 2

Pirelli Cinturato all season SF3

there is also (been around for a while now)

Goodyear vector 4 season gen 3

Other

Hankook kinergy 4S2.  (there is a new one Ion flex climate, but don't know anything about it)

Falken Euro all season AS220

Vredestein Quatrac   (Or older Quatrac pro plus)

Low mileage might mean the car sits around a lot which isn't the best for tyres and if the car is not parked in a garage the tyres are obviously exposed to the elements full time which doesn't help if parked up for much of the time.

Even with use the tyres can crack, the two Avon ZT7 on my wife's car had a radial crack in each the like of which I'd not seen before, and it was hidden from normal view by being on the inboard sidewall mid-height.

My wife's car is always parked outside, no garage, and is used most days for very short journeys but it is used everyday, very rarely day is it not used, and obviously does many longer journeys too as the annual mileages are about 8,000 miles.

My son has a mk1 fabia and I fitted GT radial all seaon for him. Have driven it myself and its got really good grip and braking in the wet plus good in snow too.  Mid range so £75-00 each fitted and they had a promo so if it was ordered online you got £30 off for four. Have the summer version on my old Skoda octavia and Seat and can't fault them.

Summer tyres (or as they used to be called tyres) are better in summer than all-season (unless things have changed?) particularly if the car is used for spirited driving or tear-a*sing about but I expect most all-season users would find them more than adequate.
