weird fuel problem

Featured Replies

Hi.

2012 plate 1.6 diesel engine, less than 79000 on the clock.

I brought this car in January when mine packed in, it was doing less than 2000 miles a year (MOT history), older driver and yes very cheap diesel being put in.

The fault is this: The fuel warning light (glow plug light) coming on with a flashing light warning.

I have had the tank flushed to get rid of the contaminated fuel (local garage, the guy is well respected man and doesn’t mess you around), new fuel filter. the filter housing had corrosion on it, that was been replaced as well after it happened again, again new fuel filter.

This fault keeps coming back.

When it happens warning light displays, normally a dip in power, feels like a miss fire, the engine will either not idle correctly, or will idle, but when you try and pull off you lose all power and the vehicle will stall out, unburnt diesel being chucked out the back of the exhaust, but ONLY, when this fault happens.

Any ideas folks?

Have you read the stored diagnostic codes?

I would not rule out a failing injector or an air leak in the pipe to the input side of the turbo.

Cheers, I haven’t had the codes read yet, I was thinking about that today.

My next call is to go back to the dealer I brought it from and have a difficult conversation with someone.

The low fuel warning light is not a glowplug symbol, in fact from memory its not a light at all but an audible bong and "low fuel" being displayed on the Maxidot, perhaps there is a light on non Maxidot models (is there such an animal?) but the glowplug light is definitely for the pre-heating time before you should crank the engine (solid light) and perhaps a flashing mode for something else, my MK2 had 4 failed glowplugs but the light never flashed.

Get the car read for fault codes. It could be failing cam sensor etc. If the glow plug light is flashing then the car will probably go into limp mode hence no power. I think its linked to engine management but you would need codes if any to help track it down.
