Leave selector in position P => will it pass the MOT?

Featured Replies

My DSG started displaying this message a month or two ago. I believe it is a faulty switch and a common problem and I have been ignoring it until now.

The MOT is due in July, will it fail the MOT because of the unresolved yellow warning triangle?

Yes, instant failure if there are any warning lights on the dashboard.

What is the error message and have you had a scan done on the car yet (ODBEleven or VCDS)?

It is the common one. Leave vehicle with selector in position P. Take me to a dealer. I get it at random times.

I suppose I could try and scan it with my dongle and the app. If I can find the dongle. I'll give that a try.

Yes, I am aware of the gear position sensor failure. It is a realtively common problem and can be resolved realtively easily.

I have seen something about a wiring harness plug-in near the selector lever, is that the way?

I'm not a mot tester but I wouldn't of thought it would fail. The failure is for warning lights of key systems, safety systems (airbags, abs, steering) or engine eml due to emissions implications. In my humble opinion I wouldn't of thought a dash message telling you about the position of your transmission selector is such a warning light. Just like a low coolant message is probably not a failure either.

Ah OK thanks. May give me some breathing room. I think I will try to resolve it sooner or later anyway.

If the engine management light is on, it will fail. A warning light only will probably be ok. Call the mot garage and ask them.

Mines been doing it for about 3 years. Sometime I get it flash up 6 times jn 10 mins, other times once every 4 months. Just never got rou d to applying the fix.

But jn those 3 years it's never failed an MOT and I've even had it flash up when I parked it at the test centr. It never leaves a light on the dash as it flashed up and goes. So don't worry about it.

Agree this fault merely displays on the dash matrix screen not dash warning symbols that are orange or red. Those get illuminated when you start the car and then extinguish if no fault is present.

I get this from time to time on my 2016 DSG it flashes up but never stays on, the get around is to work the selector backwords and forwards a few times with out the engine running, this cures it for me . It happened again last week for the first time in 12 months. The fix is a replacement switch and some wiring, comes either cheaply or expensive depending what's under the gaiter, mine apparently is the dearer option so I've left it alone. It doesn't affect the way the car drives or selection of the auto box

Some places are really stringent on things like correct fluid levels.depending on where you go.dont take the risk, top up your fluids before mot,,saves on petrol money having to take it back for retest 😊
