Front Sensor Error - Cobwebs!

Featured Replies

Hi 23 Kamiq has had errors with front sensor, so been in to Skoda for warranty claim, after dismantling they are saying not covered due to cobwebs in the sensor. Apparently no way to prevent this happening again....seems like a design fault to me. Garage have said they will cover cost out of goodwill this one time, but doesn't bode well for the future....anyone had similar?

Nope, and my Kamiq is over 2 years old and my Karoq over 7 years.

How do cobwebs get into and effect a sealed unit?

Apparently the sensor in the grille so I don't know if its sealed, but even so seems bizarre. We also have an 8 year old Octavia which has a similar sensor and has never had an issue.

@juan27 @Aldfort Were the cobwebs inside the sensor, or outside it and covering the "window"?

Recently had this on my Superb, apparently there was a spider and cobweb between the ACC cover which is part of the front bumper and the ACC unit itself which is behind the cover, cost me £140 at my local Skoda dealer.

Have since found a way to remove the cover from the bumper as shown here but haven't tried it myself yet.

No window involved.

Ok, so how does the radar transmission get from the transmitter out of the front of the car, and the reflection back to the receiver? It's most certainly not going through sheet steel!

Ok fair enough, assumed you were referring to the camera at the top of the windscreen. With regard to the radar I assume it was "on" the sensor behind the plastic cover rather than inside, but to be honest I've never seen it and don't know what it looks like "underneath" the plastics.

Ah the sensor(s) in the windscreen are visual spectrum video; the ACC and similar are somewhere in the radar bands. This sort of stuff used to part of my job.

In recent freezing conditions the problem raised it's ugly head again, only to rectify itself now the temp is back up. If others aren't having similar issues I can only assume there's something wrong with our particular car?

There are several possibilities.

Snow or Ice on the front of the car can cause this. If you want to be sure the sensor is working the cover needs to be clean and free of snow and ice.

It is possible the sensor is starting to fail.

It is a possibility the cars computer "fails" the sensor during the start up process as the car battery is starting to degrade. Modern cars are over sensitive to battery voltage IMHO.

Thanks for the response but my 7year old Octavia with a (I assume) similar sensor (and original battery) has never ever shown the same error....any thoughts? Is this a Kamiq thing or is there something wrong with our Kamiq in particular?

I don't know if the sensor is similar, technically, probably yes, but built to the same standard as 7 years ago, who knows?

If you have a code reader it might be worth checking for trouble codes.

Not seen this on my 1 year old Kamiq (yet😁).

If it's any consolation our 5 year old Golf sometimes reports rear parking sensors not working. The fault then disappears after the next engine start.
