Fabia 1.4 MK2 VRS engine making strange noise

Featured Replies

Hello guys,

I have a strange noise coming from the engine bay that started a few days ago, seems to be coming from the rear left of the engine bay. I was wondering if anyone knows what it could be?

Someone said that it's the water pump failing.

It's more noticeable when I very slightly rev the engine (see video).

It's a CTHE engine and it doesn't have any oil / coolant loss. There are no warning lights on the dash and it drives normally.

Thanks

How many miles? Water pump ? Time to change the distribution chain ?

@Erreesse

It's done 90k miles. I bought the car over 3 years ago and it didn't have much service history. I'm not sure if the water pump or timing chain has been replaced previously.

The water pump failing with a Twincharger is usually shown with a slight loss of coolant and the Supercharger Clutch is part of it and you can get a Emission Control Light or EPC light or both show, and lose the Supercharger working.

Sounds like the issue known with CTHE,s, tensioner and timing chain. Plenty threads on both issues.

If its done 90k then I would replace waterpump anyway as it hasn't had much service history and could probably do with a new chain and coolant change. Not sure on the 1.4 but does it have chain driven oil pump balance shaft like the 1.2 ? I have read they are prone to wear and can cause rattling noise.

There was a TPI on CTHE but not CAVE twinchargers on chain stretch.

Not that they stretched, but were measured.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into that, not sure if It has. It only started around a week ago and the noise has gotten slightly louder, but nothing that'd get you worried.

Thanks for the info, I'll have a look at it. There's no loss of coolant and no lights on the dash, but it's still early yet as the noise just started around a week ago, so a warning light might pop up soon.

Get a bit of garden hose or similar and put one end to your ear and move the other end around engine bay. When the noise gets louder you have narrowed it down to a certain area. I had a weird rattle but it was the bearing in the aternator had gone and the fins were hitting the casing. Only happend when I revved it as the belt was pulling alt out of alignment.

I'll give that a try in the morning and see if I can narrow down where it's coming from. Hopefully it's not something major.

Thanks for the tip.
