I already own a PDA (ipaq rx3715)

was looking and I see you can by standalone bluetooth gps receivers..anybody have any experience of these or bought a cheap un from ebay (I see them for about 35 quid on there)

and then is it just a case of buying the tom tom maps and sticking them on the SD card?

doing it this way saves a big wad instead of buying a tom tom kit as a whole

Yes, I use one with my iPaq. It's a Leadtek and I bought it through eBay. You can then get TomTom loaded and it should work fine. I have version 3 but the latest is version 5 - don't know what happened to version 4  - I have heard that version 5 can be a bit choosy about which receiver it will work with though.

You can install TomTom to a storage card, I've done that with mine.

Hope this helps. :)

I use a standalone GPS receiver I bought on ebay with TomTom on my Nokia.

Works a treat and pairs with the receiver as soon as I get in the car.

I use TT V5.21 on my MDA Vario with an external Bluetooth receiver and it works a treat.

Only issue I had was configuring the COM Port as Version 5.0 didn't support the ports the MDA Vario did but a quick download of the V5.21 update and all is fine.

I have one and run TomTom on my Treo smartphone. It works really well.

Mine's a cheapy off ebay, had it about a year and am very impressed.

I had seen them for about 35 quid...so it seems they work ok...hmm well thats good news

I also see there LOTS of tom tom software on ebay..how much of it dodgy?

I have a 1gig SD card so dont need to buy the maps already on a sd card...I'm just wary pf buying something and finding out its a time limited copy or something

99% unfortunately. Dodgy in the sense that it's pirated not that it's time or feature limited.

I have a Dell axim x50v PDA and bought a ARKON powered docking cradle with GPS receiver built in. Thats another alternative for you and it works a treat. By the time you buy mounting brackets and chargers and GPS recievers they come out at more or less the same approx.

I use a BT 77 GPS receiver (eBay again, was £50 at the time inc delivery). I have Used Tom Tom 5 Mobile on a Nokia N90 and Noia 6680, basically any series 60 will work, unless that is it's and 3rd edition serios 60 as my N73 won;t work with Tom Tom.

Have the European maps, and work well in Belgium and Holland. Fid out how usefulit willbe in Czech later this summer.

I pickedup a sirf star III chipset receiver for 37 quid...will report back next week on how it works

I use a Dell Axim X51v running WM5. TomTom runs fine (must be v5.21 for WM5) using a Holux GPSlim 236 BT GPS. Be wary of buying this GPs (which is excellent - SirfStar III) on Ebay. Although kosher they often seem to have problematical outdated firmware when sourced in this way. Have a look at the forums on:-

I bought TomTom and maps of Western Europe on CD and installed to an SD card.
