Will I get away with it?

Featured Replies

Good afternoon,

I will be attending a course for the first three weeks of May. My car is just barely due a service (maybe 100 miles overdue now, if that).

This course will require me to drive there and back twice (four trips of 120mi each) and then I will be using the car whilst on the residential course, meaning that I may rack up close to 600ish miles over the three weeks.

Will this have a negative impact on the car's longevity? It's a 2013 Skoda Citigo Sport with decent service history - I've owned it for a year now (this will be its second service) and I've not had any issues. The timing belt was done when the car was bought, and I've done nearly 10000 miles in the car now.

What do you guys think? Financially and time-wise it would be incredibly difficult to schedule a service between now and going away, but will it be alright anyway?

So it will be slightly over on the service.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Just book it now for when you are back.

Thanks. AG Falco

Are we talking the cars Service Interval as being on Fixed so @9,400 miles / 372 days.

(Skoda dealers will usually put a Service in 10,000 mile Sticker.)

Is it running 5w 30 FS III so VW504 00 / 507 00, long life oil?

I would not worry on a car already 12 years old if going a bit over 10,000 miles before the Oil & Filter change.

It will be fine ,some people run cars for years and do bugger all to them 👍

Thanks all, you are right in your analysis - there are worse rust buckets on the roads.

It's running 5w30 oil that I bought off my mechanic, a family friend. No clue what type, though I could go and ask him what it was that he sold me 😂

The Recommended oil was 5w 30 FS III so VW504 00 / 509 00 which is Long Life oil,

but the 1.0 MPI Citigo,s never had the code for Fixed / Variable Servicing so VW502 00 was and is OK for the Fixed Oil and Filter services.

I expect your oil is and will be perfectly fine as it does the job it is there for.

?

How many miles are you going to be doing from the last Oil & Filter Change?

I wouldn't think more than 11000 at the most. Maybe 11500 at the very maximum.

Poor attempt at quoting 😂

You wrote that 'this will be its second service' - was the vehicle serviced regularly before you purchased it?

Part service history. Second service in my possession, usually was serviced rather well (missing a couple over the years, notably over COVID), but it never got more than 8000 miles a year. It was on around 62000 miles when I bought it, and it is now on roughly 71400 miles.

Longer runs with the engine fully up to temperature are much better for it, you will be fine.

Thank you for the reassurance, I do appreciate it a lot. Take care!

Any oil is better than no oil! But seriously, these engines seem quite robust by modern standards and it sounds like yours has been serviced quite frequently, plus you've had the belt done. Key thing is to keep on top of it and do regular checks on the levels as it gets older. You'll probably be fine.

I appreciate your comment, thank you. I'll update this post when I get the car serviced in a couple of weeks!
