1.2TSI Gearbox Damage

Featured Replies

Purchased a crashed 2014 monte carlo 1.2tsi today, i knew about all issues including the fact it didn’t go into reverse, first and second. However, 3rd, 4th and 5th are smooth, i noticed this damage and leak under the gearbox and assume it has something to do with this, can’t seem to find much information about what it is or how to fix it

Hello, welcome to the forum.

Sorry, can't help identify what that is at moment - but it does appear that the domed part (cover??) has been struck with enough force to actually shear one of the two securing bolts!

Can you post another image giving a wider view for context?

Is this a manual gearbox?

It’s the manual 5 speed, only other picture i had but can take more tomorrow

That should be sufficient for ID. calling @ApertureS can you help?

I haven't been able to find a schematic showing what that part is - but I must say it's particularly poorly positioned for possibility of striking against road humps, etc.

The only suggestion I can make at the moment is to remove the remaining bolt and see what's beneath it.

The sheared-off bolt will almost certainly require drilling and extraction of the remaining stub.

will definitely take it off soon when i get the time, could be to do with the selector and have a spring from what i could find

It certainly appears to have allowed the gearbox to dump all its oil. Do you know if the vehicle was driven after the damage - how bad was other damage, if any?

bottom right of bumper is gone, wheel is fine but lower arm has been bent quite badly back, power steering pump bracket has been mangled too but pump seems salvageable, managed to find the part number on the sheared off part - 02t301252A, seems to be a shifter tower end cap so hoping it’s the spring or minor damage on it causing the first few gears to not engage

I've had a look at an exploded view of the part online - I'd suggest first trying to realign the end cap to its correct position, then check if the missing gears select correctly - you may need to slightly loosen the single remaining bolt first - looks like a spline type bolt.

From the diagram, the bottom section of the shift tower may project down into this endcap, with movement being restricted or pinched by the displacement of the cap.

Will give it a try tomorrow, if it doesn’t seem to fix it i’ll take the sheared off bolt out too and inspect more

From the images you posted, you will only need to remove the single remaining bolt to completely remove the cap.

Unless there was a spring fitted inside the cap - which doesn't appear to be the case from looking at the schematic drawing, the shift tower may work ok with the cap simply removed.

Removing the sheared-off stub will probably require drilling to accept an extractor.

does it look as if the end cap is holding anything in - as in if i fully remove it will i expect to see anything else come out with it, will try aligning it first and see what happens

Looking at the drawing, it appears to be just a cap, there does not appear to be anything actually on the lower part of the shift tower retained by it.

aligned the end cap and it works perfectly, will get the bolt extracted soon and drain out what’s left of the oil and fill it up - thank you for helping
