We bought our 2020 Skoda Octavia 2.0L petrol engine 12 months ago. Within a few weeks the particulate filter light illuminated, tried the owners manual recommendation to clear the filter by driving at 3-5K etc but it would not clear. The garage took the car back but at the time there was a global issue with the test equipment software and we didn’t get the car back until this was solved and the garage could run the test equipment and clear the light. 12 months on, the light came on this last weekend. It took about 40 minutes trying the driving method to clear the light but it has cleared this time. Is this normal for this engine type to have this issue, we have spoken to garage and they’ve offered us a similar model as a trade in if we no longer trust this particular car. Be good to have other users experience of this petrol engine particulate filter light??

By clearing the light using the driving method, have I totally cleaned the filter? Or is it only cleaned sufficiently to clear the light/blockage and soon it will come on again???

Have you used the correct method? - it sounds as if you have confused DPF and GPF regen methods.

GPF regeneration is done on closed throttle engine overrun.

I used driving at 3-5k and then taking foot off throttle for a few seconds. Then repeating. I did this for about 30 minutes. Nothing happened, so I switched gearbox back from manual to automatic mode. Then about 10 mins later I noticed the orange triangle and engine sign had gone from dashboard.

I'd suggest trying that procedure on a longish down hill section. Get the engine fully up to temperature first.

The GPF regen should happen in normal driving - but it appears that frequent slow driving in traffic can inhibit it.

Apparently some makes are able to do both passive and active GPF regens - but I haven't found if VAG vehicles can do this.

Thank for the responses this far, but what I’m trying to get an answer to is;

Should the Particulate Filter warning light be coming on or not?

It wouldn’t clear by driving 12 months ago and had to have some Skoda test equipment used to clear it.

12 months later it’s come on again. Yes we do a fair amount of short journeys, but not 2 months ago we drove 2000km to Lapland and back.

And I have been able to clear it this time, but is it something I can expect regularly?

It depends on driving conditions - as I pointed out in my last post.

We have no way of knowing your normal driving conditions. If you do a little searching on the internet, there is information out there.

People had the light come on during the Covid years on pretty new cars.

Cold starts and short journeys. Or they just had odd behaviours, the high idle annoyed many.

From 2018 to now is about right to find out if GPF,s will have issues.

We will find out what many dealers say replacements will cost.

People are in different countries and weathers and using E5 or maybe E10, maybe 95 or 97 or 99 ron.

Some countries are maybe 98 ron Super unleaded E5.

It will be become more apparent as time goes on if GPF,s are to become another expense people really could do without getting the Light off, or the GPF replaced.

@Suomen_Skoda I had to look at your profile to see based in Finland.

Do you run E5 95 Ron petrol and is your Winter Grade different from the Winter Grade in the UK Oct/Nov to March?

If you run some 98RON E5 in the car for a while and make you are more progressive with your driving style; do this at least once a week (and include some emergency stops to keep the brakes good too at the same time), the error light for the GPF should not come back on.

Thanks for all comments. I normally use E10, winter and summer. The light is currently clear, and I have ordered some JLM petrol particulate filter additive, comes from Germany so will be a week or so. We do a fair amount of short journeys, but that is the whole year. However on the last two months we have driven long distances, Lapland and back which was a 2000km trip and also to visit other cities. So for it to come on last week was a surprise.

Being an automatic it always keeps the revs relatively low, so perhaps frequently I will use manual mode for a couple of journeys a week to keep the revs a little higher and hence the exhaust gas temps to try and clear the filter.

if you have driving modes, put it in sport mode to rise revolutions.

but it is not about revs too much but instead heat. rise heat and burn particles, like in diesel..

also aditives for gpf are same as for dpf. liqui mily have dpf/gpf ceaner, unscrew upper lambda sonda and put hole bottle of it, return lambda and proceed according to manual..
