The Canon got lots of recommendations in this recent thread

And have a look at Canon Outlet on Ebay for some good prices.

I don't think you'd be disappointed with either.

The size of the screen shouldn't matter as you'll only use it for reviewing photos on the fly, and they won't look much different between a 1.8" and 2" screen... :)

And with the low cost of memory these days, I doubt you'll even bother reviewing them on the camera and will just take a load then upload them to your computer and clear them down from there.

The 350D does have a few advantage, such as being 8MP rather than 6 and being able to do ISO100, but it does have a smaller sensor...

Rob.

I find Canon cameras much easier to use than Nikon. More info can be found at www.dpreview.com.

I Have the Canon 350D exalant camera

Easy to yous very good results

Just by one you now it makes sense

As already said, the screen is only used for playback. Unlike normal digi cameras the SLR ones use the viewfinder for taking photos, not the screen.

We have an EOS 30D (simillar to 350) and wouldnt go back. Previously we had a 300D and that was good to, very easy to use in manual mode.

30D? Gorgeous. I'm still trying to restrain myself from buying a digital SLR. I keep trying to tell myself that I don't need it, that my S70 does all I need, but I daresay I'll end up getting one sooner or later, and it'll be a Canon, I'm sure. Unfortunately, I spent my camera fund on a Tom Tom 510!

I have the Nikon D50 and can say it's a great camera. I was also looking at the Canon 350D when I bought mine but then saw on them tried and tested on the Gadget show where the Nikon got voted the best overall and they got tested taking all kinds of photos from people to wildlife on safari. The picture on the D50 has slightly more contrast and deeper colours I found after using them both as I worked for PC World at the time. I also saw the D50 in T3 Magazine and it got a 5 star rating, the only one to receive this out of the 350D and two olympus DSLR's. Price for me also came into it, where I couldn't justify spending the extra and not getting anything from it. I know the 350D is 8MP but when looking at the same photo side by side you wouldn't say the Canon is the better out of the 2 for the reasons I stated above, colours etc. Another bonus I've found is you can get relatively cheap lenses for the D50 too.

Just my 2p

I'm sure both will be more than adequate, but from my experience, the Nikon is terrible in comparison to the Canon on low light shooting. But could be my lack of knowledge on using Nikons.

We have a 300D at work, and that persuaded me to get the 350D for personal use and I'll never look back. I got it quite cheaper than retail on eBay through the Canon Outlet with one minor cosmetic scratch. It's fantastic. Definitely Recommended.

Damn you all! Hadn't realised D-SLR's were so affordable now ... I feel a trip to Jessops coming on

Chris

Jessops will match any UK advertized price. I have just bought the canon from them. I took in a copy of the website that had the cheapest price and they agreed to match it. I preferred to get the camera from a shop as its easier if it develops a fault later on.

Was that Amazon's price? Not found it significantly cheaper on the web :D

Chris

Hi ScoobyChris. The advert I used was slightly more expensive than Amazon. They advertized at £464 but it would entail a 1 to 2 week wait. I believe it was Savastore who advertized at £469 but was available immediately. I wasnt sure if Jessops would match something not available at the time. You have nothing to loose though, in hindsight I could have possibly saved another £5. They also had a great deal on a Tamron 70-300 lens at £99.99. Even their own website showed this at £200 and I couldnt find any similar price on the web. This was a week ago in the Basingstoke branch of Jessops.

Mine was £420 from the Canon Outlet on eBay if you're not bothered about getting it from a shop. They always have 350's in.

Didn't realise you were just along the road! I'm still shopping around for lenses at the moment so I'll probably stick with the standard one for the time being :D

Chris

both manufactures will serve you well try both cameras in your hand and find out which one you prefer for its handling and that should be your choice, the 350D can be for some people a little small

I've used a Canon 350D for a while and although I initially griped about it's small size and seemingly plasticky build (compared to the earlier Canon's I'm used to such as the EOS5) but in reality it's very tough and takes very good photographs, generally the exposure is spot on and the noise is well contained. Has a very quick buffer too which is good for rattling of a quick succession of frames.

Yeah spot on advice there. Went to Jessops and had a play with them both and the D50 is so much nicer to hold and use and feels much less plasticky! So now I have to weigh up whether I'm happy to sacrifice the marginally better picture quality of the 350D (according to the comparisons on dpreview), or go with the cheaper, but much nicer to use D50 and add the money saved to my better lens fund....

Decisions, decisions!

Chris (currently D-SLRless! :( )

This should really be a consideration.

The Pentax ist DL2

It's

I haven't used an SLR digital but going on my previous experience with SLRs I'd go for the canon everytime.:)

My 1991 EOS 600 is still going strong - never gone wrong or been serviced!

BTW will my EOS 600 lenses be compatible with the new EOS digitals? I'm assuming or hoping they will be.

To answer your question, yes they will.

Thanks mannyo :) , I thought they might be, that means I only need the body then:thumbup:

I ended up plumping for the Nikon D50 after having a look at both the Canon and the Pentax :D Very happy with it, and I'm sure my young (and patient!) model won't mind me sharing this pic with you....

Damn, I started this thread, then had second thought's about buying either camera, and now made the mistake of visiting the thread again.

I'd like to apologise to Scoobychris for putting the thought into his head but I'll now have to retract that apology as you've sparked my interest again.

And there's me thinking car's are expensive :)
