Lacking Turbo

Featured Replies

Don't know if any one can help, I've got a 1999 Octavia Estate 90bhp Manual TDi

All fine and happy till I knocked the oil sump. Now the turbo only starts to come in around 3500 rpm, not the usual 1900rpm as it used to. Engine has 150k on it. There is a pipe that connects to the back of the engine (top left if looking from above) and this is leaking oil. Spoken to the garage who say that due to mileage etc they would advise to just leave it be, as not worth what else might be damaged/broken if they start taking stuff to bits.

There is no smoke from the exhaust, no noise that would indicate turbo bearings gone or in pieces. The only noise (in addition to normal) is air escaping from (am guessing) the gasket.

I've heard there is an issue with MAF, but can't see how this would prevent the turbo from working, until 3500rpm.

Any help welcomed, can't really afford whole new turbo/engine and don't fancy doing the journey to parents (150miles) or in-laws(100miles) in the wifes Seat Arosa SDi!!!

Thanks

Dave

Being doing some digging and found this list

sticking turbo due to dirty oil; dirty or faulty mass airflow sensor; exhaust gas recircularion solenoid valve sticking open; wastegate valve actuator rod sticking; faulty throttle switches; faulty temperature sensor; loose or leaking brake servo pipe or turbo boost pipe from fuel pump to turbo; faulty ECU

Anyone know how I check for these?

Shouldn't be dirty oil and it gets a change every 5k

It isn't a sticking variable vane turbo, because the TDI 90 doesn't have the variable vane system used on the 110.

If it went wierd when you knocked it I would guess that a pipe has come loose, and that could also explain the air escaping noise.

Has the car been checked for fault codes?

Car hasn't been checked for faults yet, will get one of the guys at work with VAG-com to have a look.

Can anyone recommend a good workshop manual for the car - have been thinking about haynes, but was thinking more detailed. Also anyone have any pictures/diagrams of all the turbo bits on my engine
