2 weeks in - New owner observations and questions

Featured Replies

So I'm 2 weeks in on my 2019 L&K 190 TDI estate and I've spotted a few things, I've had a search on the forum but haven't managed to find anything relevant so thought I'd post to see if anyone knows.

Coasting in eco mode - Love this, it works really well but there are a few oddities, it only seems to kick in if you come of the throttle, if you are going downhill and brake a bit it stays in gear until I Iightly touch the throttle to trigger it. I'm guessing this is by design behaviour to avoid the car rolling to fast down hill

AAC - Works well, I find it more useful on single lane roads in traffic than the motorway where it seems to get quite easily confused. Two things to call out, it never coasts when using AAC, is that correct? also if I use it in traffic it will quite happily stop the car but will only move off again if the stop/start hasn't kicked in. If the engine has been stopped it will restart the engine but I have to press the throttle to get the car to move off and then AAC picks it up again immediately, is that what other people see?

DCC - there's a nice noticeable step between the different modes but I find comfort or normal to be very floaty, allowing too much body movement. I suspect this is just personal preference, I've ended up with an individual mode with sport DCC but eco for driving which seems counter intuitive

Economy - What sort of economy are people seeing on 190TDI estates? I'm getting mid to high 40mpg reported on the dash, seems OK but I little surprised it isn't managed 50+ on motorways

Wheel size - My car came with 19" Trinity wheels with 235/40 Bridgestone Potenza tyres, they seem pretty noisy and I was wondering if the ride comfort and noise levels are better on 18" wheels? the car certainly looks good on them so not in a rush to change

Overall, it seems pretty good so far, I've updated the maps (thanks to this forum for the links) and I'm gradually working out all the features and settings. Still haven't quite got the hang of the size (it's 10cm longer and 10cm wider than my 2007 Accord Tourer!!) but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I've got to track down an odd metalic rattle front the rear right of the car, it sounds like it's inside but I've removed the parcel shelf and spare wheel and it's still happening. I'm going to get a friend to sit in the back to see if we can pin down where it's coming from.

Thanks

Robert

Hi Robert

Welcome to the gang!

Regards your tyre question - yes, you will always have a more comfortable ride on smaller tyres with a larger side wall. Your 19inch boots have a very small sidewall and so will be particularly unforgiving on any bumps, potholes, small frozen peas or insects you run over. I run on 17s (215/55/17) which have a good balance of wheel size and sidewall, helping to keep the car wafting along rather than jarring.

Also - Bridgestone tyres are notoriously noisy! Had Bridgestones as the factory tyres on my Fabia and they were very loud. My Superb has Michelin Primacy 4s which are surprisingly quiet for quite a hard-wearing tyre (mind you, my last car - MG ZS suv - had the exact same tyres, same size too) and they were also quiet on that. I replaced the Bridgestones on the Fabia with Goodyear Effecientgrip, which are very quiet and have excellent grip. Would recommend both for summer tyres. If you wanted to go all-season, I would suggest Goodyear Vector 4Season tyres. I put a set on the Rapid I had and they were by far the best tyres I’ve ever put on a car.

As for the rattle - it’s probably the rear headrest. Make sure it’s pushed all the way down. Mine make a metallic rattle when they are up and nobody is sitting in the seat.

When ACC is on, Coasting is disabled. That's normal.

With Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) active, ACC will only resume (car moves) automatically within 3 secs, i.e. if stopped for less than 3 secs. After that, u need to tap the accelerator or pull the cruise stalk for the car to move/resume.

With the 19" wheels, many Superb owners have switched to 245/40R19 tyres. Thicker sidewall and wider tyre results in more comfort. It's also cheaper and more readily available.

Nothing to add. All has been said.

One point though. The 235/40/19 tyres comfort may depend on how the side wall is stiff. Michelin Primacy should be more comfortable than Michelin PS4 for instance...

I have 5000mile old 19" Bridgestone S001's on mine. Noise wise they can be quiet on some surfaces and terrible on others. Although I don't find them harsh even with the DCC in sport.

I'm waiting to see how the Cross Climate 3 and the Cross Climate 3 Sport are priced.

On mine it's 3 seconds if I take my hands off the steering wheel or around 15 seconds if I keep my hands on the steering wheel.

when I’ve worn out my Primacy 4s I’m either going Cross Climate or Vector 4Season - both are great so it’s a case of whichever is cheapest come the time.

Cross Climate 3's and the 3 Sport are brand new, only announced this week and not on sale yet but seem to be a significant improvement on the current Cross Climate 2 which I have on our Octavia and Fabia.

For the 19" Superb wheels I'm interested in the Cross Climate 3 Sport which is an all new concept.

Great, thanks all, lots of useful information.

I ran Cross Climate 2's on my Honda so it sounds like the 3's or the Goodyear Vectors will be worth a look when its time to change.

Useful tip on slightly different tyre size, something to look into.

Thanks for confirming the other bits around the ACC and coasting, sounds like it's all expected behaviour.

I'm off to take a look at those DCC threads!

with the facelift model, the behaviour changed, yes.

tis a shame the setting (duration) can't b changed on the pre-facelift models. no one has been able to crack it yet, even looking in the associated parameter file(s).

Regarding rear rattles, what i've found so far is the 3'rd brake light plastic cover, subwoofer side seat bolster, bottom boot lip screw caps and i'm slowly going insane from a creak over uneven roads only on cold days, but i suspect it's the spare wheel foam insert. Happy hunting

I find tyre noise depends on road surface. I am just about to change my front tyres after 28000 miles. Pirelli P7.

I had a rattle coming from the rear seat catch

thanks all, still trying to track down the noise. I friend is going to help out tomorrow by sitting in the back to see if we can pin down the area its coming from.

OK, update on the noise from the rear of the car. A helpful friend sat in the back whilst we drove around, and we've managed to narrow it down the latch for the rear seat folding mechanism on the driver's side. Unfortunately, it looks pretty much impossible to get into the mechanism other than through the part where it slots on the metal bracket. We've sprayed a bit of lithium grease in there for now to see if that helps at all.

I'll know more tomorrow night as I'm off on a 3-hour drive, assuming the tow bar gets fitted as planned tomorrow.

Hoping the lithium grease helps. nothing worse that a rattle like that in the car on a long journey. But, at least you know where it is coming from so you can try stuff. Might even just be as simple as putting some extra tape around the metal loop the seat latch locks onto to form a tighter grip. Either way, do please keep us posted.
