Hello everyone,

I got my Kodiaq to service today (inspection + gear box issues). They recommended replacing rear brake pads as they are 80% worn (3 mm remaining) and they are going to charge almost £450 for that.

I am going abroad soon and I think I can have them replaced cheaper (I need to confirm that to be 100% sure though).

It is first rear brake pads replacement since we have our Kodiaq (~ 6 years).

How far (give or take) can I drive having 3 mm rear pads ?

Check yourself to see how they look like. I had the same "diagnosis" from Skoda, and they wanted some ridiculous money. Bought all the parts and replaced them myself. The pads were minimum 5mm in my case, and not 3mm (and under 3mm) as Skoda claimed. Replaced them anyway. replacing rear pads and discs is easy, but you'll need to release the parking brake for the procedure.

If you check your pads and they are truly 3mm, I'd get them changed, especially before longer trip. You can probably change both pads and discs for less than 450...?

What did they say about your gearbox issue?

Hi @rbss ,

thanks for your message !

I am afraid I am not a person that fixes car from time to time and especially replacing brake pads. Unless it is dead simple ?

How do I measure the pads ? Any picture which part need to be measured ?

Re gear box - they will submit a request to Skoda UK and wait for a feedback if this is covered by all-in service. It will take a few days.

I don't normally do work on my cars either - but when I heard this huge bill, and having bad experience with this dealer in the past, decided to do them with my friend.

With the fronts, you need to take out the calipers as well, but the rears, you can actually take out the pads and wiggle out the discs without taking the calipers. So in my case it was dead easy, but as I have said - you will need someone with access to VCDS or other system like this to be able to disable the electrical parking brake to change the brakes.

Where you off to in EU?

I can confirm that these are related to EPB problems -- we had the same issue (and the expense) last year. :(

Although it is not the best idea, we try to refrain from using the EPB, provided that the actual parking place is flat and we are familiar with that, i.e. this restrict the practice to our driveways.

I had few months ago rear pads changed. Friend did it for free. Cost of Brembo pads 36 eur.

Anyone having a detailed picture how to measure the size of brake pads ?

I'm off-ski to Poland as well, next Saturday, if the car won't cause any more troubles... so far it's starting all the time :)

With regards to the brake pads, in my last 5 years I bought countless number of car parts for our family cars, always based on the reg plate finder on popular websites and never had an issue with the wrong ones being sent....

You would need to take the wheel off, and you might be able to measure the brake pad in the brake calipers if you've got ... calipers (suwmiarka/ Vernier caliper).

btw, have they sorted your gearbox ?

Nope.

They told me they know what needs to be replaced but they had to submit an approval request to VW UK to confirm it will be covered by all-in service.

£450 🫨🫨 that’s steep , you’ve got a Skoda not a top of the range Audi

Hi,

Take a look to the maintenance manual or Brake system manual.

The way to measure brake pads thickness is described. You can buy required tools on Aliexpress for few quids.

Additionally minimum thickness is given too of course. For instance, it was 2mm without the backing plate for my former Superb Mk3.
