Quick oil question

Featured Replies

Changed the oil yesterday using Quantum long life 4 0w/20 (508.00-509.00) ''blue oil'',,, Been reading up on it and noticed i can use long life 3 5w/30 (504.00-507.00), Is this true as the 5w/30 is cheaper than long life 4. Why is the 0w /20 oil used, Is it purely to reduce emissions..Thanks

There should be a sticker on the bonnet slam panel with what oil to use.

Mine says VW508.00/ VW509.00 OW-20. 1.5 Tsi.

Dont think mine's got a sticker under the bonnet.. Is there any real reason for using 0w/20? Mines the 1.5 TSI ACT.

I have the same engine. My understanding is that the thinner oil (0W-20), being less viscous, reduces engine friction and so is used to improve mpg.

Actually used to reduce Emissions supposedly. It was to get the WLTP results for certification.

Maybe it does improve mpg, and then increases oil consumption.

But hey hoe, it is what it is.

You can use VW502 00 if you wanted for Fixed Oil Service regimes, but VW Group never showed that. With a TSI, not a TDI.

You could use VW504 00 / 507 00 0w 30 FS III with them if you wanted.

I'd read that using 508.00/509.00 can increase oil consumption. It seemed very thin when i used it, I get my oil from TPS and the long life 3 5w/30 was nearly £20 cheaper for 5 Ltrs. Don't suppose there's much difference between the two of them, Just wanted to make doubly sure i can use 5w/30...Thanks for the info.

The newer oils are primarily about reduction of emissions and letting the engine spin more freely. At least that is what all the blurb says. As long as the oil meets the required spec it'll be fine.

not great, not terrible.

car producer dont want you to have no problems with your engine, but when problem appears, they call it feature.

instead of that i am using 0w30.

5w30 isnt bad, 0W30 is better, not so thin like 0w20, in winter it do same like 0w20.

i am buying SHELL helix ultra professional AV-L 504/507.00 0w30, 5 liter can for 40€.

changing every 8000 kms.

says made in germany.
