Tow bar problems

Featured Replies

A way to assess tow hitch weight is to feel how heavy the tow-ball of the trailer is to lift off the ground with one hand - if you are able to do this easily, trailer hitch is almost certainly too light if stabiliser not being used.

The tow vehicle rear tyre pressures should be raised at least .2 to .5 bar above normal pressures.

I use an axle stand and bathroom scales 😉

I normally aim for 75kg by distributing weight.

This mentions Caravans but it applies to all trailers

Its a 5.5m rhib. Regularly used over they years and towed behind an astra or more often a hilux. It was a friend of a friend who sold it. I asked what weight it was and he told me it was just under 750kg with an emptyfuel tank. The old rhib i towed with my defender had a massive fuel tank and was 7.5m that weighed 2ton. I suspect I'll be investing in a new braked trailer and getting it reweighed.

I used to cruise a Shetland 535 - with a 40HP 2-stroke on a single-axle trailer, I was pushing the 750kg limit. Hard.

Im new to skoda ownership and this forum but took delivery of a 24 plate estate last week , the spec said towbar prep so put it into an after market fitter yesterday, recommended by the dealer, today was test day.

I sat my new trailer board in the boot while fitting the detachable towbar. Heard beeping and the tail gate was closing. Managed to stop it before it hit trailer board. After this happened a few times I remembered the virtual pedal thing. Ill need to deactivate that.

Took the boat a short journey but it felt very bouncy. Are spring assister still a thing? Had them on an old pug405 and it made a world of difference.

Then reversing into my drive, bang ,brakes slam on. Another system I'll need to deactivate.

So I take it the towbar fitter was unable to code the towbar fully as systems like reverse emergency braking should be disabled when a trailer is connected?

As others have suggested ensure the noseweight is correct.

I've towed with multiple Superb's and Passat's. There is a large overhang so the trailer does have some leverage on the rear suspension and certainly some still fit assister springs etc. I tend to spec DCC now and tow in individual mode with the Suspension set to sport.
