MPG Query

Featured Replies

Hi guys know I haven't posted much on here but not been well. Basically my Furby has 9k ont he clock and around town without the air con I'm getting around 45mpg when driven normally. With the air con on I'm getting around 38-40mpg.

But on the motorway today, (speedo indicated 85 ish) it still only managed aboput 42mpg with the air con on and I don't know what I'm doing wrong? I thought the Furby would be much more economical than this? Decided to go for a blast too and average around 110-120mph (on a private runway of course) and the computer still showed about 38mpg.

What am I doing wrong? :s I would have thought on the motorway I should be getting 50-60mpg?

85 is quite fast remember... what is the cars revs at that speed? 3500?

Not on a modern diesel!

Revs at indicated 85 (true speed 80) is around 2500rpm

All your figures ARE CORRECT. Thats just what I get. You are doing nothing wrong

At an indicated 85 mph with aircon working hard thats not far off the mark.

Try driving at 73-75 and you should see a big jump up.

Average 72 mph today (sppedo showing 78) in 6th and trip computer average shown 57.7mpg around 200 mile trip.:)

thats almost exactly the same as my figures , i did 219 miles at an average of 57.9mpg :D

Sounds as though I need to slow down lol. Wil try it next time on the motorway.

On the subject of economy, at what revs do you change gears to get to 30/40mph? And what do you do 30/40mph in? I use 4th for 30mph and 5th for 40mph but just before I used 6th for 40mph and it was much more economical. Saw 55+mpg without aircon.

Not had the car long and just trying to learn how to best make use of the engine.

My vrs seems to be comfortable in fifth at 30 and sixth at 40. Not had the inclination to look at the trip and check which it says is more economical though.

My 05 is at 9800 miles now and your figures are same as I get. The air con really makes a difference, if I drive without then a good 2-4mpg better.

Comments same as above regarding consumption at the various speeds.

I rarely use 5th in town on short trips, sometimes on faster country roads. Sixth is only when rolling well on dual carriageway/motorway and open roads where there's a clear run. Otherwise the change speeds are about right as above.:)

It's not so much gear speeds but driving style - I can get 50+ (real not guage) through Leicester city centre by reading the road, reacting early and using overrun rather than braking - every time you brake you are wasting fuel because you have to speed back up again, use overrun so the fuel shut off is on for longer and you lose less speed between hazards.

Another bonus is disks, clutches and tyres will last longer too

i agree on this , looking ahead and assessing whether you will require braking or just let the engine slow you down is one of the main reasons i get good consumption figures and my pads are only a third worn after 32k miles:thumbup:

Well its good to hear others are getting similar figures. I did an advanced driving course with the IAM ad do read the road ahead etc but I also like to make progress ;)

Does the car become more efficient with more miles?

Does the car become more efficient with more miles?

yes the engine will free up a bit so should be more economical

I've just been and brimmed mine (free diesel) and then re-set computer and give it a good slapping around local decent roads, music ( the Smiths) on loud and air-con on full pelt.

23.7 miles on return home.......

Average 28.7 mpg:eek:

I need new tyres, and if I dont buy them as soon as I get paid I will spend the money on useless things like food, so I am making sure that I DEFINATELY need to buy them.........

( Don't tell the wife:O )

music ( the Smiths) on loud

don't get me wrong here as i enjoy the Smiths also but i wouldn't of said it was driving music IMHO , but i suppose that is just another thread that has been done to death before:D

Surely the MPG would improve if the music were smooth and flowing: Strauss maybe, or a bit of Greig ...

It would only improve as the driver would end up slitting their wrists

Translated this with Google Language Tools from IAM to English - it means throw the book out the window and drive it like you stole it

Well firstly I'm in Liverpool and secondly I'm asian....of course I stole it! :D

Kept mine to 70ish today over 30 miles, air con on half the journey & av mpg was 63.2.

If I do the same trip at 85 I only get 49 mpg.

I believe one of the advanced driver people said that drag (?) doubles from 60-70mph and doubles again from 70-85mph, which means that they will be quite a big difference in economy between those speeds. However it can't be that important to them as I've never met an advanced driver who drives at 60mph where it is safe (and legal) to travel faster

Discretion is the key.

You will find that as the engine beds in, the mpg improves slowly, then 1 day you will suddenly realise youre geting the 48 - 55 mpg ( depending on how much lead is in the right foot.

I found once past 15k miles the mpg had improved.

FYI - Std Furby vRS - from tank full to warning beep is between 400 - 410 miles, that is doing 75 mph on Mway for 20 miles and back roads for 30 miles- to / from work.
