Who has 1.6FSI ?

Featured Replies

How many people on here have an Octavia2 with the 1.6FSI engine ?. I want to buy a new Octavia in the future and was wondering what the performance is like with this engine?

It's claimed to do 40mpg but I can't help thinking 115bhp is a bit under powered for a car of this size. I currently have a Fabia 2.0 with 115bhp.

The 1.6FSI fits my budget best but I don't really want a car that you have to rev the hell out of it all the time

Driven one ........Sorry to say Guttless.........:o

Yes I agree with that statement although i'm used to diesel so I was always going to be dissapointed. It doesn't lose out to the diesel altogether though as the engine is lighter so the car is a bit more manouvreable. Unfortunately there's insufficient power/torque to make the most of that and for a petrol engine the 1.6 FSI is on the noisy side too. In saying that you may find it ok as you are currently driving a Petrol car anyway.

The 1.6 FSI in the Golf is considerably slower than the Mondeo too, as I discovered today  Although saying that, I've been out in an Octy I with the 1.6 engine and it didn't feel underpowered or gutless, although whether it is or not, depends what you're comparing it to! :D

I have one! I've always driven petrol cars, am not a high mileage driver (last year did about 5000 though this year with a new car it will be more). Anyway for the amounts of miles I drive and what I am used to I went petrol. Having had a 1.6 engine before I wanted something similar which would be reasonable on the mpg/insurance/tax. I'm not that fussed about it being a bit underpowered though compared to my old car it isn't.

Petrol consumption has been around the 40mpg mark overall on a mixture of motorway driving, A/B roads, countryside and urban. Its a bit difficult to be precise as the first 2000 miles I drove around with overinflated tyres as I never thought to check them from picking up at the dealer. most of the miles todate have been on the 95ron though I did 500 miles or so on the optimax but didn't notice much difference on the fuel economy.

i suggest you take the 1.6 out on a test drive over the types of roads you are likely to cover to see if the engine suits your kind of driving, if not consider the 2.0 engine?

I don't drive one I'm affraid but 'What Car' magazine seem to like it as the Octavia 1.6 FSI Ambiente has been best in class winner for the last two years. I would suggest you take one for a thorough test drive before you make up your mind.

I have one, I changed from a 1.6 VW Golf. The Octy has the 115bhp engine, the Golf had the 105bhp. Early days yet, but overall I can't detect much difference between them. I think the Octy is a bit higher geared so although it's about 10-15% more frugal with the petrol, and high-speed cruising is quieter, it seems a bit less torquey on hills. As has been said, it depends on what you're comparing it with!

Thanks for the replies. I'm comparing it to my 2.0 8V Fabia which is quite torquey and also a smaller and lighter car.

The 1.9TDI is quite a bit more money than the 1.6, it also costs about the same as the 2.0FSI.

I need to test drive the 1.6FSI at some point, I may be better off looking for a second hand 2.0FSi. I only do about 10-12K miles a year so don't really need a diesel.

I only do about 8.5-10k a year and still wouldn't entertain anything but a diesel. A vRS would be nice but i couldn't live with the mpg.

Ive got one!!

Love it. Its makes a decent change to drive it, compared to the Fabia. I wouldnt call it slow and it makes a nice noise :D The build quality and feel of everything is excellent.

1.6 is a bit gutless.

But hey, its a 1.6 engine in a big car, what did you expect?

It still as comfortable to drive as other Octavias so if your not bothered to much about getting from A to B as fast as possible its probably a good buy. It won What Car awards in its class two years running IIRC.

Meeeeeeeeeeow!!!

Hey, they are next to each other on the keyboard.

I've driven the 1.6 FSI golf in Switzterland as a rented car, and to be honest, it was fun and a really nice drive, sounding engine. I wouldnt say it was gutless, but it wasnt fast. Maybe in the Octavia it might be a tad slower...

Yep it sure did

But even What Car says it isn't perfect:

Performance

1.6 FSi is a bit short of breath on the motorway

When I test drived the 1.6FSI it was a big improvement over my 1.4 16V Fabia estate (which has been great for me), but when you have children and the fact that it is so easy to get caught speeding these days, only the harshest of critics can slag the engine off. You can cruise at 90mph easily in it and I found there to be enough in reserve if needed.

I've owned Golf 1.6 FSI and comparing the torque with diesel engines with similar power makes me choose diesel. Only on the motorway I could be satisfied with petrol (but not like with diesel) but on any other roads taking over other cars always makes you do a lot of gear shifting, high revs and high consumption.

Example, 40 mph and you want to take over quickly, you have to go down to the 2nd gear to get high instant power and then after 2-3 seconds to the 3rd and then the rest. If you were in 5th, driving 40mph and you see your chance to pass quickly the car at the front, there is no much to do. Gear doesn't let you do 5th to 2nd. You have to go 5th to 4th and just then 4th to 2nd. But, that way you've lost the precios time already. Your only chance is if you knew road well, you get the 4th before comming to the place good to take over, so you can get quickly to the 2nd. If you don't know the road you have to wait for your chance always in 4th and increase mpg, or in the 5th and when you get the chance to take over go to 3rd but then engine has no enough power to accelerate quick enough so your safety might be in risk. Few times I was in hurry and this problem just gave me big headache so I had to drive in 4th behind slow lane. And it's curious but slow moving lane looks like it's always going 40 mph.

I've had one for almost a year now. I spent around 8500 miles driving on 95 Ron (got 41 mpg) and then tried some BP ultimate (97 Ron) for a laugh to see if it made any difference. To begin with it didn't, probably because it was diluted with the old Tesco 95 Ron. Maybe because it was cleaning the engine or becoming a purer mix in the tank it did start to help and now I am getting really excellent fuel economy and a little boast in perceived power at low revs.

I find it very hard to complain about my car - it is currently giving me 44 mpg on mostly A-road driving with some town and city (trip computer says 47). On a recent 60 mile trip along the Antrim coast road it gave me a ridiculous 59mpg figure on the trip computer (all 50mph and totally flat road). I would agree that some people could use a little more torque on hills, but I've never found myself struggling unacceptably and I can more than live with the mpg.

fella go for a brand new 1.6, instead of a 2nd hand 2.0, 3 years free service etc.

i took delivery of a 1.6 4 weeks ago and with my previous car being a v6 vectra, going from 175bhp to 115bhp, i was worried, i knew it was going to be slower in relation to the vec, which i can live with, but i thought it would be sluggish also, it is not. during the test drive the 'pick-up' surprised me, of course you can't pull from 20mph in 5th anything other than slowly, day-to-day driving i don't go past, about, 3,500rpm, there's no need, and no i'm not a dead slow and stop kinda driver.

before the vec i had two mondeos, a 1.6 petrol and a 1.8 petrol, the octy is brisker than both. of course it's your choice, but the 1.6fsi is perfectly find for everyday driving.
