Winter wheel/ tyre options- 2016 TSI 280

Featured Replies

Hi, looking to move to Italy with work later this year, and realised that I’ll need to get a set of Winters for the Superb.

Being the TSI 280, I think it has the 345mm brakes? It’s on the 18 inch wheels currently, are there any 17 inch OE wheels that will clear the brakes? Reason being I reckon 17’s will be cheaper for the winter tyres than 18’s. I’d prefer to have the spare wheels to switch in and out as required.

Any advice on decent value All season tyres?

Best option for all season tyres is either Michelin CrossClimate or Goodyear Vector AllSeason. Both tyres are excellent in all conditions. Don’t waste your time with any other all-season makes. Nobody comes close to these two.

However, for Winter-specific tyres, my recommendation is Uniroyal Winterexpert.

340mm front discs, 310mm rear. Not sure whether 17s fit over them but doubt it.

Michelin Cross Climates get raved about as all seasons.

Is it All Seasons that are needed or actual Winter (Snow) Tyres and will the car be going where snow chains might be required like into the mountains?

They should - same setup as the vRS, GTI, Cupra and, until the latest models, the S3 and R. They all have 17s as the minimum size.

Bear in mind in the EU, cars must have winter tyres and these tyres must be marked accordingly. If you're only interested in ticking the box, a set of 17" steelies might be what you're after - they're dirt cheap and won't suffer from corrosion.

Italy has rules (15th Nov - 15th April) about winter rated tyres, or compulsory carrying of snow chains. Not just in the mountains, but even down in south in Puglia and Calabria. Doesn't apply everywhere, but unless want to check local rules easier to comply.

As Italy has a wider temperature range than UK (can get to low 40s c in summer, and below -10c in mountains in winter), think you are sensible having 2 sets, rather than all seasons. A 55c temperature range is too wide for physical properties of a tyre and will be compromised at the outer ranges.

Škoda have a wheels brochure (can be ordered from parts Dept) and also a winter wheels (with tyres) brochure. But likely to be cheaper to shop around for tyres (and have more choice).

17" are ok on 280ps 4x4, i use for winter set

on 17" can be also installed custom size of tire 225/55r17

in compare to OE 215/55r17 they give:

+10 mm in with

+5 mm in height

and closer to real life speedometer values, due +1.5% in circumference

As haven’t tried all available makes of all season tyres I can’t speak to the performance of all the others, but the Conti AllSeason I have fitted are excellent, and were #2 in the tyre review when I bought them in late 23. If Michelin had the same price offer as Conti at the time, I’d’ve probably gone with them.

I also have 17s on 225/55 like Martini Racing above, and they are fairly OK in winter here. We had a fair shade of snow, and mostly wet near zero temps, and the response was very good.

As in most parts in Italy, the temp ranges are very high, we are since little over a month with near 30 deg C and during winter we have more that a month in sub-zero deg C.

All seasons are fine to use BUT they deteriorate rapidly. Did not want to risk, on an car I still do not know.

In Italy is the same with the requirements to have chains or suitable tires. I have parents and relatives in the North and they used allseasons and they are fine, but there is no skiing trips, long winter trips , or anything, My relatives in the RM region and friends in the Islands use only summers, but they do not travel into mountain/snowy regions, and in certain areas they have not seen snow in years .... but everything can chance!

One last thing to consider: in Italy laws are anal and sometimes enforced with attentive detail - this is subjective to the officer that stops you, of course. So if you put tires that are NOT in your car set be aware you are risking - like me with the 225/55 mentioned above, but is a gamble you have to take.

Also, if you go work there and reside for more than an year, you might be required/forced to register your car in Italy, and the initial inspection might point that out.

Sorry for the typos, I've got a failing keyboard in the laptop and sometimes I see them too late ...

215/55R17 6.5Jx17 ET41 are the only wheels approved by Skoda for the fitment of snow chains on the Superb MK3 272HP/280HP 4x4.

You can order alloy rims from the Skoda accessory catalogue from any VAG parts department, by quoting the relevant OEM part number.

The OEM part numbers of the below four alloy rims are 3V0071497, 3V0071497B, 3V0071497F, 3V0071497G. The format xxx071xxx means they are from the Skoda accessory catalogue. Alloy rims from the Skoda accessory catalogue are about 60% cheaper than Skoda's normal prices because Skoda are using their accessory catalogue to compete on price with aftermarket alloy rims.
