When can I boot it

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have had a 2.0 TDI Oct Combi Elegance for a week and already racked up 1,000 Kms, I am in Spain, I have been driving at max 2,500 rpm, a few times overtaking more and up to 3,000 for a bit on the toll roads, but when can i start pushing it a bit ?

IIRC it's about 3 x that amount but your handbook will state the exact figures under the 'running in procedure' part of the manual ;)

mmmm manual is in Spanish,

"Honest John" of the Daily Telegraph has the following in his FAQ section:

7. What's the best way to run-in a diesel engine?

For the first 1,000 miles do not exceed 3,000rpm, but make sure you reach 3,000rpm regularly. For the next 1,000 miles (to 2,000 miles) do not exceed 3,500rpm, but make sure you reach 3,500rpm regularly. For the next 1,000 miles (to 3,000 miles) do not exceed 4,000rpm, but make sure you reach 4,000rpm regularly. For the next 1,000 miles (to 4,000 miles) do not exceed 4,500rpm, but make sure you reach 4,500rpm at least a couple of times a week. After that, no limit, but make sure you continue to hit 4,500rpm through the gears several times a week. The benefit of this is it helps to self clean the injectors, it blows any accumulated soot out of the exhaust system and it helps to free off the piston rings, making the engine more efficient and less likely to use engine oil.

So it sounds as though you're doing the right thing.

Well I had no idea when I registered this morning that this would be so cool, thank you all , especially John Morr only problem is using this advice i am going to lose my licence as 3,000rpm on my car on the motorway is 150km´s lol

Hehe - that's one of those problems ;)

Before your first service, keep an eye on the oil as it tends to use some during the running-in.

The trick is to avoid cruise control, and just use the gears a fair bit to loosen things up. I'm sure you'll enjoy the occasional 150kph ;)

How long to wait until you boot it? Until the oil is up to temperature ... and then enjoy ;):D I wouldn't personally bother with the running in procedure.....

I agree :D I never ran my furby or octy vRS in by the book, just used common sense..... which I am lacking a little of tbh :D

4000 miles, and only 200ml of oil used thus far...... Don't confuse oil temp with the water temp though :D:thumbup:

The salesman at Saltdean told me the best used Skodas he'd had back as trade in were the ones that had been thrashed. [No, I didn't do that, so don't blame me!!]
