Yes, go in through the dipstick.

I bought a Pela last year but got fed up constantly pumping the pressure to keep it sucking and although it showed it had removed just under 6 litres, I was paranoid that there may have been muck at the bottom of the sump.

I suppose if you are changing in between a dealer service it isn’t such an issue but I do my own servicing so in another 6,000 after the service I’ve just completed (removing sump plug) I may just use the Pela again. Certainly saves the faff of jacking

Many Thanks , i will go down that route. That did make me think also that I maybe leaving dirt at the bottom of the sump, but as you say will be doing it between the dealer oil change. Thank You.

The adjustment I would make is forget the 0w 20 FS iV with a 2.0 TSI or any even with a GPF and going to if stull using Long Life oil even for fixed servicing or sooner and go 0w 30 FS III. So VW504 00 / 507. Not VW 508 00 / 509 00.

I am already on 0W-30, but want to "upgrade" to at least 0W-40 or 5W-40 at worst, as I mentioned before I still suspect the reasons for said "recommendation" are friction/consumption/emissions based, and not technical longevity or performance, which in my mind vastly overtake anything else powerplant related.

Unfortunately, the VW504/507 norm does not contemplate any other oil except 0W-30, and mostly Long-Life at it, again useless as I don't do variable servicing ...

If anyone with an earlier 280/272 (JR perhaps) could tell me what is what they have as oil type ... 😚

I have a 220, MY17 with the CHHB EA888 Gen 3 engine.

It's been serviced by Skoda with Castrol Edge 5w-30 since day 1, for the first 5 yrs of it's life.

Since then, out of warranty, it's been serviced at a Euro specialist with Mobile Super 3000 5w-30.

Both oils r VW504/507 approved.

8 yrs plus now on 5w-30 for Gandalf.

It has been tuned for more that half its life.

I'm pretty sure it's the same oil used with the 280 pre-facelift Superb.

I have a late 2016 2.0 Tsi 4x4 (280) and all service records say Castrol Edge 5W-30 was used, I personally have used the same since I’ve owned it.

Just looking online I only see 5W-30 listed as being 504/507 specification and none were 0W-30?

Maybe just me not searching thoroughly enough?

Okay, looking again 0W-30 is listed as 504/507 specification too

The only 0W-40 I see that meets VW requirements says it is VW 511/00 so might be a dubious option 😬

Be advised that, for whatever reason the lighter oil was specified, some engines are optimised to run on it.

I have a DKTB EA888.3 that runs on 0W-20 - bearing tolerances and a variable speed oil pump mean running a heavier oil might not actually be the best thing for it. Traditionally yes, a lighter oil offers less protection at operating temp. However, with tighter bearing tolerances and a pump designed to keep a thinner oil at higher pressure, all around the engine, from what I've seen the effect is the same.

Advice from various places is to stick with manufacturer recommendations, unless heavily tuned. If the car is designed/recommended to run on 5W-30, why change it? Most people have issue with the viscosity when cold (0W).

VW 504/507 was 5W-30, seems now it has changed to 0W-30.

If you go to erWin Skoda and register an account (free to do so) you can then click on the link a little below the register button on the homepage and view ">Approved oil types".

Amongst the list for 504/507 oils that have been tested and approved by VW group, there is a fair proportion (maybe 30%?) of the oils in the long list that are 0W30 rather than 5W30.

Thanks! Let me rephrase,I got no problem with the "cold" viscosity ... the only experiment in this regard I've made it was in the Ct200h wifemobile, which once I failed to secure the recommended 0W-20 and found 5W-30 and on startup/initial cold running the engine was noticeably rougher.

So I am with you on the cold concept .....

My concern is, as explained, at high temp/high load. Don't know you guys, but except a brief spell, it has been every day around 30 Celsius since mid-June. This puts you in the "tropical operating environment", and running on the highway at 2.4/2.7k RPM (that'd be 130/150 km/h) with a loaded car and AC on, I still believe puts a -30 to the edge of its limiting capabilities, true I seldom see past 110 in the instrument cluster indicator, but...

Bear in mind all my other vehicles, albeit older, have always run on the various combinations 5W40 5W50 10W60 .... I am just not used to water for oil 😁😚

Lacking grounds to safely change - I do not know if I have the variable oil pump, for example, which to me also sounds folly - I might reduce replacement interval ....

Thanks for bearing with me, feel free to simply write "stop thinking about it and DRIVE!" 😄
