ABS fault

Featured Replies

Hi

Have got a ABS fault in my Yeti and seeking some advise (sorry for my bad english, from Norway)

After sitting all winter it startet up an run fine a couple of days, but after a while at idle, ABS fault came up. EPC, ABS and brake warning light i dash, also have problem with instrumentscluster lights and fuel gauge

Faultcodes 01316 Brake control module and U012100 Lost communication with anti-lock brake system ABS control module

There seems to be power in the conector to the ABS module in engine compartment, and looks like no gunk on any connector

Any advice on this matter?

ABS wheel sensor perhapd?

I think my personal first port of call would be to check that the battery is in a good state of health. A lot of electrical gremlins can be either caused by the battery being at a low state of charge or even if the voltage has dropped during cranking and sent everything a bit crazy which then puts lights on the dash and codes on the ECU when nothing is actually wrong.

If the battery is fully charged and fine, I'd try to get some live data from the wheel speed sensors to see if one of those is failing. Another option is to find an empty bit of road and safely jump on the brakes to activate the ABS (or not if it's not working). Sometimes if things have been sitting, things can get a bit sticky and need something to wake them back up 😁.

I agree with Scott 4x4, the first thing I'd check is the battery. I had a similar problem of a lot of warning lights coming on for no obvious reason ad because my battery was several years old I had new one put in. Problems gone. Over the years on this forum there have been a lot of reports of strange electrical behaviour being down to a failing battery. And if the battery is a few years old putting in a new one isn't really wasted money even if it isn't the cause of the problem - replacement was probably going to be necessary in the the not-to-distant future anyway.

(Your English is fine by the way - I like that you've picked up "gunk" 🙂 )

Did you solve it?

It's almost certainly a failed ABS wheel sensor or a worse case scenario, the disk (rotator) ring.

I ended up buying a plug in fault code reader to find out which one failed. I simply replaced the sensor with a new Ebay sensor for £15. It's a 15 minute job.

Thanks for all the tips so far

Unfortunately the problem is not solved yet.

Error code reader cannot connect to abs module, considering buying ross tech VCDS reader....

Yeti has just been standing since the error appeared.....

Planning a slightly longer trip in the summer of 2026 (15,000 km) so need the car in top shape

I will send you a message requesting the VIN, so that I can look up full information relating to the ABS module in your Yeti.

There is almost certainly more than one power feed to the module, but there are usually two or three variants so I would need VIN to find the correct diagram.

@Kalkveien Wiring information suggests that there are 3 separately fused power feeds to your ABS module. Cabin fuse 19 (5 Amp, ignition switched) and engine bay fuses 4 (20 Amp) and 25 (40 Amp), both permanent 12V.

Check all three fuses.

Unfortunately all fuses were intact. Does anyone know which pins on the abs connector can be measured?

Ignition switched feed from fuse 19 in cabin goes to pin 8

Permanent feed from engine fuse 4 goes to pin 1

Permanent feed from engine fuse 25 goes to pin 32.

Pin 47 is earth.

CANH (Powertrain) bus connection on pin 12, CANL on pin 13.

Leider waren alle Sicherungen intakt. Weiß jemand, welche Pins am ABS-Stecker gemessen werden können?

All contacts on the connector worked as they should, so that means unfortunately that the ABS control unit is defective?
