Plastic sump plug leaking

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

About 3 months ago i replaced my oil sump due to a crack. I replaced with an OEM plastic sump, new bolts and seals. The job went well, no issues or leaks.

However I have recently noticed a few spots on my drive. I checked and found the sump plug to be leaking, very very slowly. about 0.3L over the three months.

Problem is that these plugs come pre-installed on the sump and cannot be tightened any further. Safe to say im pretty frustrated, and wish i had gone for a metal aftermarket sump. I can't think of how i can resolve the issue without dumping 3 month old oil.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? it doesnt look like a common issue.

do you change it by yourself or in some garage?

if so, go to them to fix it with new plug.

oil can be reused. they put it in a clean canister and return afrer fix.

Isn't that type of sump plug sealed with an o-ring (rubber)?

May just need to replace that.

Reg or VIN would help me to check part numbers.

Seems a bit wasteful, surely you could just change the o-ring?

But at those prices it wouldn't save much money, so the environment will suffer instead.

I changed the sump myself, and i'd rather not go to a garage.

Single use sump plug does sound wasteful. I suppose i would have to find a clean container for the oil so I can reuse.

Thanks for the link but i think 10 is excessive and i'd rather just buy what i need. Pretty sure a standard screwdriver works on the plug also.

I'm just shocked that the sump came with a leaky plug. Reckon I could go back to the supplier and get some sort of compensation or am i wasting my time?

Worth trying. They might just send you a new plug.

I've had one or two leak before a bit. I jave put up until next change. So long as the plug is secure. They rotate 1/4 or 1/2 turn. You cant tighten further.

I'm sceptical if genuine plugs are any better than any generic replacement but you could try.

They're like £10 a pop though.

I don't think I've ever used the genuine ones, so mine having leaked, will be using cheapo equivalents..

My sump is genuine though but have had to replace the gasket once..

What make is your sump, do you mean genuine (oem) or after market named equivalent?

Put in clean container and reuse.

Oil pretty cheap though so maybe wait 3 more months then do oil change a 6 month interval.

It won't hurt doing a change after 6 months
