Fire extinguisher - OE and options

Featured Replies

I wanted since a while to ask this, but I always forget. Last time when I made our equivalent to the MOT I was asked for the fire extinguisher, which was in a plastic zipper bag under the main luggage floor deck, it is one of these easily available in the stores ones, nothing special.

But it gor me wondering and gave the idea to ask fellow members here, who have one - either because it is mandated or because of choice - and if you do, where do you keep it?

I also noticed Skoda offers an OE accessory option for this, here is the diagram

https://www.lllparts.co.uk/catalogs/skoda/CZ/SUP/851/0/011/11011

and I can imagine this fits under the drivers' seat, like ze German counterparts.

Driven by impulse, I went ahead and order one of these brackets but now I got wondering that I have the Canton system and might not fit, also another question to whoever who eventually does have this fitted.

Thanks!

We're not required to have one in the UK, but I bought one in 2012 before we went to Belarus as they require one to be carried in the car and I thought they may check everything in detail on the border or if we were stopped by the police, but they didn't check anything. I've still got it and its next to the spare wheel, though its probably date expired by now.

I'm not sure how effective these small extinguishers are on a car fire. If you have a fire under the bonnet and have to open the bonnet to try and use the extinguisher, this could be very dangerous and I'd rather get away from the car quickly and call the fire brigade. I'd rather lose my car than my life!

I remember in the early 1970s I parked near a Jensen Interceptor and was admiring it when I got out of my car when I noticed what I thought was steam coming out of the bonnet and thought that he maybe had a leak in the cooling system. It was getting worse and then I realised it was smoke and then one or two flames came out, so I rushed to the nearest phone box (no mobile phones, of course) and dialled 999. In the few minutes it took for the fire brigade to arrive, the fire had increased and I was standing well away. They levered open the bonnet and flames and smoke poured out that would cause serious injury to anyone with a car extinguisher trying to put it out. By the time the fire was out, the car was in a mess and probably written off.

I've had two engine fire events - the first was a car coming in opposite direction and fairly small when I got to it - 2lb dry powder knocked it down immediately.

2nd was my Mk3 Cortina, (fuel line rupture) used both CO2 and Dry powder extinguishers, which initially appeared to knock it down - only for it to flare up almost immediately - cue quick retreat and request for passing motorcyclist to call camp fire truck.

Only have a small aerosol type in my Octavia currently, in the load bay.

I carry one in the boot luggage cubby hole.

As far as bonnet fires go the percieved wisdom is (if ithe fire's not already raging) to flick the bonnet catch then lift it gingerly a few inches (if not too hot) then shove the nozzle in and blast away.

Opening it wide just adds a burst of oxygen and a potential flare up. 😳
