Starting and idle problem

Featured Replies

Greetings from Finland!

First of all i want to apologies for my bad english but i hope you will get the idea of my problem

So the situation is this, i have skoda octavia rs 2.0 tsi and i have problems with starting and idle.

Every now and then, when i press the start button, it feels and sounds like that car is not running all the 4 cylinders and then shuts down, sometimes this happens 2-3 times in a row. Yesterday did it again but no fault codes appeared.

What is done so far is that lambdas and maf and sparkplugs are fine and the intake manifold is cleaned via nutblast. Timingchain is also replaced last May.

Any ideas what to do next?

Hi. You can also try cleaning throttle body. Did you clean both the lambda sensors?

Try compression test.

Car repair shop, where my car was, told me that both lambda sensors were fine. I guess they checked them both. That throttle body cleaning would be good idea too 🤔

I can mention that compression test on thursday when i bring car back to the repair shop 👍

Is it when cold or warm?

Has the car been sitting for a while when this happens or randomly occurring?

I think maybe a fuel pressure issue due to fuel leaking back and letting air into the system somehow.

I'm quite sure this happens when the engine is warm. And yes, randomly.

Doubt a compression issue would be as intermittent as described.

I'd think fuel pressure or loose /broken wire connection on something or dirt in crank angle sensor or something like that

Next time it does it, try reving it a bit and see if that helps.

How long does it run for?

Maybe the timing on the start button is a bit off and it only just cranks for long enough. Presume it's a push button start job.

Try holding button down or key in start position for a bit longer??

Alright then, we have a winner!

Apperantly the camsaft adjust magnet was broken. There is two of them and the car repair shop have changed 1 today and the other will be changed tomorrow.

Thank you for helping me with this problem and i hope this will help someone in the future 😊

Great news. Finding a fault is like winning a throne. Please keep us updated about the performance of the car. By the way, how did you find the fault?

Finnish vRS group member had this exact same problem. I came across his post in Facebook and i sen him a message and asked if he could tell me the oem-number of the part. Then i called the work shop where my car was and told them to check those magnets. That's about it.

I am excited to hear the changes in the performance of your car. How is it running? Did you see any change in engine noise? What are you rpms at idle? Any change in fuel efficiency?

So far it's running great, only one time idle was a bit weird but car did not shut down. I don't know about the sounds but it seems that consumption in city is little bit better, ~8l/100km urban. I know that TSI RS isn't the most economic car but i think that is pretty much as low as it can get. Rpms are ~800

I was planning to check air filter and maybe clean up the throttle body just in case.

So, it seems that same problem is back. I was leaving at the grocery store with my son and i press the start-button and car immediately shut down. No idle problem, just shut down.

Starting feel that i'm losing my hope with this car 😩 maybe i should have bought bmw or something else 🙄

Fuel economy is really really bad, i can barely get under 10L/100km in the city, there must be something seriously wrong with the car

That doesn't sound that bad.

Mine is about 7 on mostly rural roads with very little stop start. That's a 1.4 TSI too.

I doubt it's that serious if no error codes and otherwise driving fine.

You may need to take the car to a different garage who can do the diagnosis more thoroughly.

Hello @rikuje ,

I faced the same problem on my skoda Octavia 2.0 tdi mk3 2020 l&k and the solution was somehow unexpected,

After I did a full scan of the car I got the error code P0191 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Problem,

I changed the sensor but the problem persist and the solution was to just remove the ECU cables and reconnect them and the car now works just fine.

Nice to hear you got everything fixed 😊 i'll keep those ecu cables in mind 👍

Sorry to hear that. Have to tried cleaning injectors and fuel lines (along with fuel filter)? German cars are sensitive to fuel quality. Check your fuel tank maybe it is dirty. Empty your fuel tank and refill with good quality fuel. Another way is to check fuel pressure just before intake manifold. Turbo can also be a problem.

I have using x1-r bensin + booster additive after refueling. I believe fuelt filter is integrated to the pump so it can not be changed 😐 i have used 98 octane fuel wich is highest in finland.

Funny that you mention turbo, i have been a bit conserned about it because lately i noticed that every time i accelerate very sporty lots and lots of grey or white smoke are coming from the exhaust. Not sure about the color though.

@rikuje did you solve the problem? Whats going on with the car?

Nope, still mystery. Car is going new repair shop wich suppose to be better than previous one. I heard new idea wich can cause this problem, misaligned timing chain

Hi @rikuje Whats happening with your car?

Nothing much, no one knows what could have cause those problems, altough it havent shutting off like two weeks now so hopefully it never will again. Next thing what will be happening is oil-consumption test. Dealer will pay this too. Car repair shop said that smoke/steam could be burning oil but i dont believe that because oil level is not lowering at all.

What about the turbo? Did somebody check it? Also, did you check fuel pressure and injector performance?
