Superb issues...

Featured Replies

Hi all

Recently, my superb has started losing power for a split second while driving. This has been intermittent but has become more frequent. It's also causing multiple issues as in photos that can be cleared by switching off the engine, taking the key out then restarting. When it does this, the idle revs increase. The mechanic has suggested a can bus error

Just wondered if anyone has any thoughts or similar experiences?

So two things, when was the battery last changed? An aging battery can cause this

Have you had it scanned? I recently had all of these and it was right rear ABS sensor

When I scanned mine it said there was a fault on rear left, but I also used measuring blocks in VCDS to confirm, in the measuring blocks I selected all the ABS sensors, went for a drive and all reported speeds apart from rear left, boom confirmed the issue, £40 later and fixed.

The rear left seems to be the most common, but you need it scanned

Thanks for replying. No I haven't had the battery changed. I've had it scanned but there wasn't anything obvious apart from some of the temperature readings being extremely high (2200 degrees) or very low (-273).

I’d recommend getting the battery changed and “coded” in

Temperature seem odd but not sure what that’s about

What does codes mean?

Basically you can take the old battery out and put a new one in and off you go, but the car will still believe it’s a degraded battery and not charge fully or something like that.

If you have an AGM battery type now and put in a new Varta as an example it’ll be 70ah instead of 68ah, so that needs changing as well as the serial number.

It can be done using vcds, obd11 etc etc

VCDS isn’t cheap but imo the best diagnostic tool, as our cars are getting older it made sense to get to invest in vcds as garages charge a fortune just to check

We had a very similar problem with our 2016 Superb. We were advised to get a OBD monitor. The fault code indicated a faulty camshaft detector. We got changed and it fixed yhe the problem.

Thanks, could I ask the cost of repair roughly please?

Without reading the fault codes is difficult to say but an ABS sensor fault will also give you the same warnings on the dash.

The fact you have Tyre Pressure warnings (which use the abs sensors) would make me think this if more likely then a camshaft or crankshaft sensor fault which shouldn't affect the TPMS.

Thanks, to be fair I think the tyre sensor became faulty first and started flashing, indicating a fault.

My issue was in the Octavia but I guess the system in the superb is the same.

Here's a post about how you can diagnose the speed sensors with a free diagnostic tool and some pictures of the repair.

Note: it seems I was lucky and my issue was only with the sensor.

Sometimes the issues comes from the trigger wheel which is built into the wheel bearing which can be a more expensive and difficult repair

Thanks for this. Unfortunately, I don't understand any of it and wouldn't know where to start. I think I'm going to have to take it to an auto electrician as it seems from replies above it could be anything. I don't have the understanding or skills to do any work myself.

  • 4 weeks later...

We are experiencing exactly the same issues , and the same faults on the dash..

Absolutely at our wits end , haven't had the car long and it's been at garages more then with us... no one seems to know what's the issue as its not showing anything when plugged in..

Like you if you turn the car off and back on again it clears..

Ours first started after we changed the front tyres ..

Mine is booked in with an auto electrician next month. I'll let you know what happens, but as soon as I described what was happening, he said it sounded like an ABS sensor fault.

We've ours booked in monday for the abs sensors 🤞🏻IMG-20250919-WA0015.jpg

Similar to the other post by another poster and when mine did this (280 petrol) , it was the battery.

New battery, Carista coding and all good since.

Check the battery first especially if it's old.

Well , replacing the sensors and the battery have made no difference... still a christmas tree Light show on the dash

No idea what to do next ...

Any ideas??

Was the battery coded in?

The chap plugged the machine in, and said it didnt need to be coded in as it wasn't asking for it

It does need some parameters to be changed for optimal battery performance

What was the error code?

I dont think there was one , the mechanic plugged his machine in and said there were no codes coming up ..

Literally do not know what to do next

We did think it was all ok as drove it about last few days no problems .. no error messages ..

Then this afternoon up come the messages..

Only 3 for a while , then as we slowed down the other 3 lights came on ..

We're ment to be driving it 300 miles tomorrow to see my son , dont think we will be now

Its so frustrating as no one seems to know what's up as the messages dont stay in the memory, as soon as you turn the car off and re start they dissappear !

When I changed my rear right ABS sensor, I read that often it's not actually the sensor but can be the trigger wheel of the sensor which is built into the wheel hub.

Without seeing a list of DTCs & performing some diagnostic is difficult to say what is the cause.

In my post on the Octavia forum I showed how you can read the ABS wheels speeds to help diagnose which one if any is causing the problem...

We're try anything...

Fortunately my brother in law is a mechanic so hes been doing the work for us

But hes flummoxed by what it is too .

Weve taken it to a few garages .. no one seems to know , it's so intermittent and doesn't stay in the memory , so isn't showing fault codes.. only the ones when where driving and if u pull over , turn engine off then restart, they dissappear and off you go .. till they come on again

If it didn't keep losing power we'd drive it but as it is we cant trust it .

Although yesterday only 3 lights came on once we changed abs sensor

There must be a fault to trigger those errors in the system & even if it is intermittent, the fault codes should stay in the history as "passive" errors if you use the correct tool to read them.

A Skoda garage should also be able to install a data logger to monitor the wheels speeds and capture the behaviour

This was how I diagnosed my fault, I could see the right rear wheel speed intermittently to 0kph while the others were working....

At least pinpointing the source will help the next investigations...

Which wheel

Sensor (already done)

Check wiring harness

Wheel hub

Our first port of call was a skoda garage..

They were absolutely useless , they had the car for over a week .. even showed them the codes that were coming up

They said they couldn't find anything

Only a possible oil leek under the engine..

Which they would charge 3500 and it may not be the cause ... in there words !
