whistleing turbo?

Featured Replies

when i drive along and put my foot down there is a short whistle (in all gears) is this just the turbos fan? is it normal?

cheers

'tis normal - I think most do it, mine certainly does.

I bet my car would sound sweet with a turbo whhhhhhhhhhssss

... Untill I snapped a driveshaft or sommit

It's the seven dwarves in your tailpipe :D

Yep, perfectly natural, i consider mine to be loud. But then, my turbo whistling is nothing compared to Harry's

Mine does it too. It's even been known for remapped vRSes to whistle on tickover.

Mine does the exactly same thing (also in neutral), except I don't have to floor it. If I floor it then the sound isn't as strong. And it's definitely not normal...

I noticed it today and it definitely wasn't there before. It's like a sound from a dog whistle.

The car is a 2006 vRS with 40.000 kms (25k miles) on the clock.

Any new info on that would be much appreciated:thumbup:

All turbochargers tend to whistle/whine a bit - it's just the gases building pressure to produce the extra power. When I start my car the whistle kicks noticeably in as the turbo fan starts to crank and then it settles down and you can only really hear it when you put your foot down with the windows open... and even then it ain't loud... certainly nothing I would worry about.

not as loud as this i bet lol

Are you sure you aren't de-catted?? ;)

my 04 VRS is quite quiet , but my brothers 56 VRS is quite noisy turbo whistle wise when the throttle is blipped ,

My old Fab VRS whistled when the turbo kicked in, I'm a bit dissapointed that the Octy VRS does'nt do the same as it sounded quite nice :)

mine whistles away quite happily......think it sounds kinda cool lol

What worries me is that the sound wasn't there before. And it's quite strong. I can hear it with windows up and radio on. It's a high pitch whistle, lasts about one second and it happens anywhere between 1700 an 2500 rpm.

I haven't heard any car produce that sound.

And I'm sure I'm not decatted:D

Maybe your Furby is spotting attractive females as you drive and sending them a wolf-whistle. I'm sure you could emulate that with some nimble accelerator work.

If your turbo noise is an actual whistle, and not a shriller screech, and it definitely hasn't been there before then I would think it comes from an air leak from the pressurised hose after the turbo’s compressor stage. With time and lots of engine vibration, the hose linking the compressor outlet to the intercooler can split, or have a loose or dislodged hose clamp. When the pressurised air escapes, mainly under engine load as you describe, then you would hear a louder whistle. Get it checked mate, as I think this is (hopefully) your most likely problem, and the cheapest to rectify.

That's the answer I was looking for:)

Thanks mate:thumbup:

It goes to the dealer's on monday, will report on what was the problem.
