Unusual high oil consumption

Featured Replies

A friend of mine's Furby 1.4 16V petrol engine ate about 1 litre of oil in aproximately 4000 km. I find it rather unusual, especially for a petrol engine...What do you reckon? Any ideas?

how old is the car/engine and what's the mileage?

Thats well with what most car manufacturers will call normal... which is normally 1litre per 1000km, thats with Honda anyway... i think VAG is similar.

As long as its not leaking and there's no blue smoke coming out the exhaust then i wouldn't worry. ;)

I hope you mean NO blue smoke coming out of the exhaust

The car was made in 2000 and has ~ 80000 km.

Seems reasonable then - might have a seal gone on it perhaps though.

The Fabia Owner's Manual says:

It is normal for the engine to consume oil. The oil consumption may be as much as 0.5l/1 000 km depending on your style of driving and the conditions under which you operate your vehicle. The oil consumption may be slightly higher than this during the first 5 000 kilometres.

The oil consumption of you friend's car is well within the above figure. I would monitor the oil consumption to see if it is increasing and at what rate.

Your friends car is well within the manufacturers limits, but I've never had a car (petrol or diesel) burn as much oil as that. Obvious questions are...

1. Has the car burnt this much oil from new?

2. Has the car recently had an oil change?

3. How many miles does the car cover annually?

4. How is the car used (ie. long journeys or stop-start around town)?

Just another one to add - it is VERY easy to overfill if the car isn't perfectly level IIRC, when you take the oil level is that before the engine has been run (i.e. after leaving it overnight)?
