Kamiq 1.5 Petrol starting issue

Featured Replies

The Mrs has just bought a ‘21 Kamiq 1.5, drove it away fine from the garage, filled with petrol and drove to see some family on the way back. When I went to start it to go out for dinner, it turned over and briefly started, but then cut out. I tried again, but it wouldn’t turn over when turning the key in the ignition.

I tried locking and unlocking and starting again, once or twice it’d turn over and die, one time I was able to get it to run briefly, but again it cut out.

Didn’t have any warning lights on the dash when driving it prior to this (same day). The dash isn’t dimming significantly as I’d expect if the car battery was knackered and no errors on the dash.

The annoying thing is she’s just bought it and only done 50 miles in it. The garage are having it recovered so it can be looked at. Wondering if it’s worth waiting to see what’s wrong with it or just reject it and get my money back. She’d Px’d a Golf GTD that was working fine to buy this and she’s stressed!

Hello, welcome to the forum.

Sorry that your wife has run into a problem.

Engine starting, then stopping almost immediately can indicate immobiliser operation - but AFAIK would not prevent the starter from cranking the engine. That symptom might indicate a bad connection on the starter circuit.

Hope they sort it quickly for her.

Tempting to imagine that this problem was why the previous owner offloaded it.

Might indicate potential for a frustrating time if retained.

Just to state the obvious. She was driving a GTD now she's driving a petrol car.

Yes, we moved house and her commute is now 3 miles instead of about 15 miles before, which wont do the diesel any good, as she doesn’t do many long journeys

Any refuelling occur?

Edited by Breezy_Pete

Ah, is she absolutely certain that she filled up with petrol?

I filled it, unless Esso had diesel in their petrol tank, which smelt like petrol, no mis-fuelling occurred 😉

Fair enough, it was a good point Aldfort raised though, new cars with different fuel from old ones presents a risk.

Easier to misfuel petrol into a diesel than t'other way round though, due to different nozzle diameter.

Absolutely. That was the first thing the dealer asked and having seen numerous people mis fuel cars, I appreciate it’s easily done!

The dealer called and apparently the issue is with the immobiliser in the key. They’ve said it needs reprogramming. Not sure whether that’ll definitely solve the issue, but I’ve rejected the car and will be collecting the Golf to come home and will look for another one, maybe after our wedding next year. To be fair to the dealer, they offered to have it sorted and deliver the car to us at home next week, but with them being 170 miles away, if anything else was to go wrong, there’s no easy way to get it dealt with.

Anyone selling a Meteor Grey Kamiq Monte Carlo 1.5 petrol manual with a heated seats/steering wheel and climate control?

Moot point now, how many keys were supplied with the now-rejected vehicle?

Two keys, neither of them would make it start

Unless this was a battery issue? Years ago my son was buying a 3 year old 2016 Octavia 1.2 that was displaying strange errors. It had been at the dealer a while and the battery was basically goosed. I insisted on a new coded in battery - that was back in 2019 and it's still going strong with no further issues. Sometimes the battery can suffer when stood on a forecourt for a while.
