Squeaky brakes in reverse... but not always!

Featured Replies

I have 4 month old SE L Edition and over the last couple of weeks I've noticed intermittent squeaking when braking at slow speeds in reverse. It doesn't always do it, seems to be worse when the weather is cold, this morning in the milder weather it was non-existent.

I initially thought it was when I also had a bit of lock on the steering but this week have noticed it when reversing straight back as well. No noise whatsoever when braking driving forward at any speed.

Any ideas what the issue might be?

It is almost certainly the brakes making the noise, so what more can be said.

Once the pads are worn a bit more it might go. How many miles done in 4 months?

Just over 3000 miles on the clock, a lot of town driving. Was fine until a couple of weeks ago. I guess my question is really, is it a trip to the garage or wait and see?

I wouldn’t worry too much…….

Hi @debnlass ,

I've had my SE L Edition for 4 and a half years and it still squeals a bit in reverse at low speeds usually only when I haven't done many miles.

Still on the original rear pads/discs at 47k miles.

So as @Berisford says, don't worry about it.

Mine SE L does same, rear wheel brake squeal. Starts when reversing then carries on when driving forwards. Usually in damp/cold conditions. Its been 100% ok in the Summer.

Back in 2019 when the car was only a few months old, I had the exact same problem with our Karoq when roads were wet - the brakes would squeal when reversing.

Lots of people were experiencing it back then and was a known problem to Skoda. I'm pretty sure it was put down to a batch of faulty pads. Anyway, they changed them under warranty - problem solved and never returned in the near four years I had the car.

My SE L is around the same age (end of September). Was OK when I got it, but I have noticed it on occasion recently. Still trying to pin it down to cold/damp etc weather, but as I reverse onto my drive, I'm not reversing the car much now when it's not warmed up (if that makes sense).

I don't think it's something to worry about, but I'll certainly monitor it and might raise it at the first service next year.

My previous car a Passat B8, squeaked on reverse almost every time I reversed off the drive. If I revered onto the drive - no squeak .

My new Superb SE L does it the opposite. I reverse on it squeaks when I drive away not when I drive on.

Qualifiers this is not after a few minuets but rather hours ie overnight. Less than a few hours there’s no squeak at all.

There is a tiny slope of about 4 degrees down towards the house.

Your issue may be different.
