SKODA FABIA 1.2 TDi ERRATIC STARTER/WONT REV UP

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions where I should go next.

Bought a Fabia 1.2 tdi greenline non runner. 161K miles and not been used for 3 months . Well thats what I was told. Would just crank over but not fire. Plugged it in VCDS a.d came up with loads of faults. Got it running and fitted new

Fuel pump regulator, fuel rail pressure sensor, heater plugs , timing belt water pump and cam sensor, crank seal and crank sensor and clutch, fuel and oil filters etc etc.

During this time the car would exhibit crazy starting behaviour. You could come to it and it would just crank. Lock it and unlock it and it would start but you couldnt raise the revs about tick over. Switch it off and immediately restart it and it would be fine and rev and drive. Didnt always follow this pattern and sometimes was OK. I also had an auto locksmith come out and make and program an extra key.

Fitted new EGR cooler and Turbo and now it exhibits the same behaviour as before but if you try and rev it up it goes into a misfire at approx1200/1400 rpm. Checked all connections including vacuum pipes to components. Also given throttle body a thorough clean. Tank fuel pump has been checked and is OK. When scanned by VCDS theres no faults showing on the engine but on addres 44 Steering Assist its showing 01314 Engine control module 49-10 No communication - intermittent. I ve been told that on these early models not everything was covered on scans. To be honest I m getting completely stumped. Any suggestions gratefuly received thanks

Did you ever remove all the fuel from the tank?

Yes sorry . The tank was drained and new diesel plus correct injector cleaner added

I did and injection quantity deviation measurement, can only be done on tickover though. Came up with following

Cylinder 1 -52us

Cylinder 2 12us

Cylinder 3 36us

All of which means nothing to me sadly

Had similar on an old car. Would start no problem and idle but as soon as you revved it misfired and stalled. Wouldnt go more than 1100rpm. It was a faulty MAF. I replaced it with a known good one and it cured it. Another possibilty is that its been badly remapped?

Cheers. I ll change the MAF for what it costs. No idea if ECU has been messed with but I think theres a tool in the VCDS menu that can reveal if it has.

Had a friend who bought a 1.9tdi cheap as it wouldnt run right at low revs. Some previous owner had had a go at boosting power but it ended badly and the car wouldnt run right. He got it put back to factory settings and it was spot on. Tell tale sign was loads of black soot from exhaust and it would drive but only at full power plus mpg and emissions were shocking. Hope changing the MAF helps.
