Space Saver Spare Tyre

Featured Replies

Hello

I am about to take delivery of a 2nd hand 2024 Mk 4 Superb estate 4x4 with the TDI 193ps engine. As far as I know it has one of these skooshy tyre inflators so I have been researching space saver spare tyres. The Mk4 accessory brochure lists a space saver wheel 4.0Jx18 ET 28 with a 125/70 R 18 tyre at £191. No cheaper options seem to be available - road angels are £250! Looking for cheaper alternatives on Ebay only produces the Mk3 spec wheels 3.5J x 18 ET 25 with exactly the same tyre.

So the question is - would the older and cheaper wheels fit my Mk4? Has anyone experience of fitting this older wheel?

Thanks

What size tyres are on your car? Best get a good steel wheel with an identical circumference of a tyre since you have Haldex if you might have to carry on travelling for more than just a few miles at a much reduced speed. @Carlston will know what your options are.

I had assumed that the specified space saver would be the same diameter as the standard tyre - wrong! According to tiresize.com the standard tyre, that according to my paper work, is a 235/45 R18 is 26.3in while the space saver is 24.9in. I agree this might make for a very unhappy Haldex system.

I will now have to investigate a full sized spare if I can get it to fit. That will have to wait till I actually get the car home and check out the boot.

What have other people done about getting a spare tyre for your Mk4?

The below spare wheel kit for the Superb MK4 can be ordered from any VAG parts department by quoting the OEM part number, ie. 3P0093860

It's not for the plug-in hybrid.

Check with the VAG parts department that it will fit your car before ordering.

Superb MK4 spare wheel kit (everything except for the actual spare wheel) 3P0093860 (1729CZK about £62.21)

@John517 Thanks for starting this thread. Getting a spare wheel (and jack, and everything else that would be needed to change a wheel at the side of the road) remains on my To Do list. I'm telling myself that if this was easy and relatively inexpensive then I'd have sorted it out by now.

Here's what the 2024 brochure offered:-

As you've noted, the costs for new parts are not insignificant, with these guys quoting £212 for a 3.5J x 18“ wheel with a tyre, https://shop.wingsskoda.co.uk/products/skoda-spare-wheel-karoq which they say is compatible with the Superb Mk4. The Czech Skoda site https://eshop.skoda-auto.cz/cs_CZ/rezervni-kolo-18---dojezdove/p/3P0073098A says that the wheel for a Mk4 needs to be 4J x 18“ (the Superb Mk3 seems to take the 3.5J x 18").

On top of that we need to add the cost of a wrench, jack and a polystyrene jack-holder ("spare wheel kit") such as the one Carlston highlights above and we're looking at nearly £300 for something heavy that we hope never to need to use.

Might be worth checking our AA/RAC/Green Flag breakdown cover in the meantime.

If there's not enough room in the spare wheel well for a 235/45R18 or 235/40R19 wheel, (or even the narrower 215/60R16 or 215/55R17 wheel), then there might be enough room for an even narrower 215/60R16 fitted to a 6J rim width (eg. 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 from the 2WD Karoq).

A 215mm width tyre can fit in the spare wheel well of a Superb MK3, so maybe there's a similar amount of room in the Superb MK4. If so, there would be no need to use a 125/70R18 space saver tyre.

As you can see in the chart below, a 215/60R16 fitted to a 6J rim is between 11mm to 21mm narrower than the standard Superb MK4 wheel sizes.

Actual outside widths of inflated tyres (measured from sidewall to sidewall at the widest point)

215/60R16 fitted to 6Jx16 ET43 rim 215mm (from Karoq)

215/60R16 fitted to 7Jx16 ET43 rim 227mm (from Superb MK4)

215/55R17 fitted to 7Jx17 ET43 rim 226mm (from Superb MK4)

215/55R17 fitted to 7.5Jx17 ET41 rim 232mm (from Superb MK4)

235/45R18 fitted to 8Jx19 ET44 rim 236mm (from Superb MK4)

235/40R19 fitted to 8Jx19 ET44 rim 235mm (from Superb MK4)

Thanks for the post @Carlston, and for highlighting that there are two factors to consider here: will the wheel fit in the well under the boot, and also will it roll safely when bolted to the wheel of the car at a maximum speed of 50mph/80kmph.

As @John517 posted, there are loads of 125/70 R18 3.5J wheels available on Ebay from other Superbs, other Skodas, other VAG cars (such as Golfs) and other manufacturers. If they'll roll safely without mechanical risk then that looks like the best way forward.

Have you looked in the boot?

Mine has the outline of a spare. The Dealers would have happily sold me one, but mentioned it’s over £300 😵‍💫

I bought an 18” emergency spare plus neck etc. not the foam bit. My boot also has the bit the large plastic thread fits in allowing the wheel to be locked in position. The Jack/tool bag are tied to the wheel with straps. Safe secure at about £190 all in.

It’s only fitted for long runs including motorway driving.

YMMV.

I've not seen inside the boot of a PHEV, but my understanding is that the space normally occupied by a spare wheel instead contains the hybrid battery. In other words, there is no dedicated well for a spare wheel (spacesaver or otherwise) to sit.

The designer's intention in cars like these would be that you phone your breakdown service provider (AA, RAC, Green Flag etc.) and borrow a wheel for the remainder of your journey. This might happen once every 50,000 miles (80,000 km) on average.

If you're desperate to have a spare wheel to be used in the event of getting a puncture, you'd need to carry it in the boot, and perhaps make something yourself to hold it securely and cleanly.

The discussion above is about which spacesaver wheel and tyre would fit in the limited space under the boot's floor of "regular" (not PHEV) Superbs. If you were to carry a spare wheel in your boot, you wouldn't have this limitation, you could carry a full-size wheel and tyre if you wished.
Hope that helps @Badelhas
