Increasing the weight of the car (towbar + LPG tank). Which rear springs should I use?

Featured Replies

Hi. I've added weight to the rear axle (towbar + LPG tank), adding about 80 kg. I currently have 3Q0 511 115 M springs for PR code 1JP+0YF (I have DCC). My car is a Superb MK3 2.0 TSI 280KM 4x4 L&K. I'm currently replacing the entire suspension with Bilstein B6 Damptronic, so I also want to use appropriate springs to level the car.

Which OEM rear springs should I use? Version N (for 1JP+0YG) or version P (for 1JP+0YH)? Does anyone have a Superb 2.0 TSI 4x4 with DCC, towbar, Webasto, window, sunroof, etc.? I'd like to know the maximum weight group for my engine with DCC and maximum equipment.

You added the weight of a passenger to a car that might carry 4 passengers and the driver. Do you run the car fully loaded with passengers and luggage and near the max load weight of maybe around 700 kg ?

The weight was added as a static mass, at the very rear of the car. According to the table, the equipment affects the springs used. I also see the "dog ****ting" effect, meaning the rear is normally lower than the front, but when loaded or a trailer is attached, it sits even lower. As for driving with a full load, say 500 kg, if four large men with heavy suitcases get in, the weight is distributed much more evenly, as about 400 kg is between the axles, which lowers the entire car, not just the rear.

What are you going to be towing, and is the 80 Kg including the tank filled with LPG? PS i wish you had told Skoda / VW that sand bagging MK2 Fabia vRS Hatches to make them 5kg heavier than the 9 3.4" longer estate by putting 25Kg ballast oin the rear crash bar and a 19 Kg spare and kit in the spare tyre well was not Simply Clever while the Polo got the battery in the boot and no spare and could tow as could the Polo & Ibiza & A1 Twinchargers. Kidology and adding weights while others decreased weight in vehicles.

Do they have the same rear springs? My question is simple: which springs should I use and what spring codes are used on the Superb 280 with DCC and L&K at maximum load? Can you help?

@Carlston Will be along hopefully. He is a fount of knowledge. Re the vRS Fabias, the Estates had the stronger springs so the tail did not drop and the front wheels lose traction causing wheel spin, ASR / TC coming on and poorer 0-100 km/h times. Poorer times than the heavier Polo & Ibiza. That is just how VW Group roll. Cheaper cars not allowed better performance figures.

@StRaDiVaRiUs-PL

add to choice list also Eibach Pro 11-79-013-01-RA and 11-85-016-10-HA

which will be less sensitive to load changes as they are ~15% stiffer than OEMs

first are perfect on 280ps AWD hatch

(no towbar, no sunroof, no LPG tank, but with full diameter 205/60r17 spare wheel on alloy)

@CarlstonMam nadzieję, że będzie z nami. To prawdziwa kopalnia wiedzy. Jeśli chodzi o Fabie vRS, kombi miały mocniejsze sprężyny, dzięki czemu tył nie opadał, a przednie koła traciły przyczepność, powodując buksowanie, uruchamianie się ASR/TC i gorsze czasy przyspieszenia od 0 do 100 km/h. Gorsze niż w przypadku cięższych Polo i Ibizy.

This adds nothing to the thread. The Superb, Passat, and Arteon all have the same springs.

I saw your thread, and thanks to it, I know about the Audi spacers and the Arteon mounts. Thanks a lot for that :) However, in my opinion, the Eibach Pro-Kit from the Kodiaq, Touran, or Q2 isn't a good idea for the Bilstein B6 Damptronic. The reason is simple - the Eibach B6 uses the original springs, not the hardened ones. By using the much harder ones from the Kodiaq, you're changing the damper characteristics of the B6, which aren't designed for them. What good is not lowering the car if you're using a damper that's not designed for these springs and the car's weight? The second reason is DCC - that's why I have the damper range adjustment to use them. Instead of hardening the suspension with the Kodiaq spring, I'll do it with the DCC Sport. And if I need more stable handling, I'll change the anti-roll bars and bushings from the TT RS.

Can't help with your specific application.

But I have a 2.0TSi FWD with DCC and factory towbar. I read elsewhere that factory towbar increased the rear springs stiffness from factory.

But when I looked into what mine had fitted it was no different to cars without towbar.

Edited to add.

When towing a trailer with 80kg noseweight I tend to use the DCC in Sport.

If you wanted standard but the next weight class up wouldn't that be 1JP-OYG?

Kilen and Lesjofors are the same springs, made in the same modern factory in Sweden...just sold under two different brand names to increase market share. They are the biggest manufacturer of aftermarket car springs in Europe.

Kilen 65127 and Lesjofors 4295137 are sold to replace 3Q0511115N and 3Q0511115P, but are probably 3Q0511115P springs.

This is the purpose of the question - should I use springs for 1JP-0YG or 1JP-0YH?

@Carlston I'll need a little more of your help, if possible. I'm currently choosing between 3Q0511115N and 3Q0511115P. I can buy the OEM product at a great price in Poland (e.g. 3Q0511115P for 19 EUR including delivery/pc.). The only information I don't have is where versions N and P were used (exactly - with what equipment).

Two more issues arise. 1. The springs in @Carlston's link are only applicable to the Superb 1.4 TSI iV; they don't cover the Superb 2.0 TSI 4x4 280. They replace both 3Q0511115N and 3Q0511115P. 2. Eibach has a good description of this. There's an R21093 spring with 13mm wire for the 2.0 TSI 280 4x4, which includes a towbar and DCC. It replaces the M version, so I'm wondering if it was possible to use the N or P springs on a 2.0 TSI 280 with DCC when fully equipped. For example, the R21706 spring, replacing the N and P springs with 13.5mm wire, is available on the Superb 2.0 280 4x4, but only for the 1JA suspension, and DCC isn't mentioned there.

With the extra 80kg weight of the LPG tank and towbar (in addition to the 4x4 system) you might find that the unladen ride height is still slightly low with either of these springs.

If so, increased ride height rear springs such as 3Q0511115AS (build codes UC7+0YF) might give the desire result.

Although 3Q0511115AS rear springs would give increased ride height on a FWD Superb MK3 (without LPG tank and towbar), the extra weight of the 4x4 system, LPG tank, and towbar could cause the increased ride height rear springs to look like standard ride height rear springs...and similarly the standard ride height rear springs to look like lowered ride height rear springs.

With the same wire diameter and number of coil turns, the Eibach R21706 and Eibach R22930 rear springs should have similar stiffness. My preference would be to try the standard ride height rear springs first, because 10mm lower rear ride height gives better handling...and only try the increased ride height rear springs if the rear ride height is too low with the standard ride height rear springs.

I don't want to go that route. Right now, I'm closest to the N or M version with Audi spacers, or the Eibach 21093 because of the 13mm diameter and the "towbar" designation. The standard M version in the KYB RA5337 or Sachs 992 238 that replace the M version has 12.5 or 12.75mm wire.

Do you have weight charts for the 1JP-0YF, 1JP-0YG, and 1JP-OYH?

FWIW I have just replaced the rear springs on my 2015 Superb 280 L&K estate with DCC but no tow bar with Eibach R21706 items. There is a marked improvement to the ride and control of the rear in all DCC modes - the previous floatiness is gone and it doesn't feel too stiff/brittle, even unladen in DCC sport. The distance from rear wheel center to arch bodywork is 39cm when unladen with half a tank of fuel (cf. 38cm at the front, on the original springs at 65k miles). YMMV, etc., but I suspect you'd be happy with a set of those, given I am on a non-towbar car without the LPG tank.
