You will remove the bolt and slide the sleeve back you will measure the dimension of the now ovaled out hole on the gear selector, you will choose a slotted spring pin as per ISO 8752 or DIN 1481 that will have around 1-1.5mm of compression you will drill out the hole of the sleeve (NOT THE GEARBOX SHAFT THE SLEEVE OF THE GEAR SELECTOR) to the appropriate size that will be exactly the same as the now worn out hole on the gear selector rod. You will install the new spring pin with an Oetiker hose clamp over it to avoid creep.

I’ve been and measured both the shaft and selector and the measurement have me confused and don’t match with your directions.

The gearbox shaft measures 8mm and the gear selector sleeve measures 8.5mm.

What do you suggest?

Okay, okay, isn't it ovalled out on the radial direction?

Either case, an 8x25mm roll pin would be ideal as it is closer to 8.5mm

You can try a 10x25mm roll pin, but it is going to be rather hard to install.

If and ONLY IF the gearbox shaft is substantially ovalized, you can drill it to the next diameter that will take out the ovalness.

In any other case, a replacement shifter assembly will fix the issue (6U0 711 023). But firstly, try the pin

I think the 8mm pin overall is going to give you acceptable results.

Note: if its ovalled out, you have to install the roll pin with the slit facing the minor radius of the oval so the pin can compress asymmetrically and take out even more slop.

Also, looking at your video I think they have installed a M6 bolt which is a bad thing, but meaning just a replacement with the 8mm pin would reduce the play by 4 times, so if you have 40mm of play you would get around 10mm which isnt bad (I have around 20mm of lateral and 10mm of longitudinal play).

Wasn't just Jags it was all old British cars and motorbikes, of course this was good British design and build, constant change of lubrication. wink

IIRC(?) with old Jags they more sent the oil out of the exhaust. Sometimes black smoke if E-type with triple SUs set up by an owner that shouldn't have.
