I still haven't figured out what this round thing is. It's at the back of the handbrake unit. Can anyone enlighten me?

Ashtray with a missing lid. It's in the cupholder. Revove and dispose if you don't need it.

I had a go. Couldn't get anywhere. :-/

Err give it a good tug !! (the ashtray) hopefully the previous owner didn't glue it in.

Wrap a nylon scouring pad around it and twist it out. If the scouring pad does not provide enough grip then you might have to revert to two combination pliers to get enough purchase to twist it out.

Unfortunately, it seems that they did! I've tried to pull it out with pliers but all I've succeeded in doing is snapping off bits of plastic. I guess I'm going to have to take a hammer to it and then somehow get all the bits out.

I would not be good to glue an ashtray in, as how were they going to empty it!

Try hammering gently around the top, going all the way round several times.
