Door strips - what to adhere them to the door with?

Featured Replies

Now I've managed to find some used door strips, what's the best method to stick them to the doors, to avoid them from falling by the wayside in the future? Given that the car came with 75% of the strips missing, I think it's worth using something that'll keep them in place! :-)

I think the factory used adhesive tape. Your safest bet is urethane-based adhesives.

The engineer in me now wants to nerd on the best adhesive for the application, but I can suggest a few products without being affiliated to any company.

Sikaflex®-254 for average adhesion but minimal prep

or

Sikaflex®-554 for strong adhesion but higher prep

or

SikaForce®-803 L45 for extreme adhesion but higher prep (2-component)

Similar products can be found by 3M and Henkel.

I chose Sika cause of availability, which is generally rather good...

One of the best pieces of advice I can give you bout me is never ever let me dive deep into engineering subjects

other use windshield glue

Butyl windscreen sealant is a high prep material that needs either the same material base, which is why people shave it and not remove it completely, or specific etching primer and bonding to clean metal. It's a very tricky thing to use, and it makes an absolute mess.

The quickest and easiest (and probably what the factory used) is 3M Automotive VHB double sided tape.

And while we're on the topic of glues, what glue to use for the boot lid seal? It's quite a hefty seal....

You mean the part of the trunk door aka 5th door? With wood inside, grey carpet outside and clips to keep it tight with the body of the door?

I think I'll go for the 3m VHB, the strips only have adhesive application areas about 5-10mm thick at the upper and lower surfaces, in between is hollow.

I'm not familiar with it but a small amount of tiger seal would probably do the job... It kept the roof to windscreen seal in position on my old Honda Civic at silly speeds and also held the sill trims on too.

Yes D 🙂

So, the 3M Automotive VHB double sided tape is on it's way, which leads me to another question - as you can see from the attached images of one piece of trim, it has small residues of the previous trim tape used - do I need to remove this, if so, how? It is really difficult to remove!

Sandpaper (low grid in the beginning) will do the work, do not use tungsten bit because you will destroy everything in the surface (needs a lot of experience and a very steady hand).

Use gently a Glass scraper

and remove any glue residues with isopropyl alcohol.

Yep, got one coming

Together with a buffing wheel a polished bar could help more than plain wheel.

An example:
