Radio 4 - Skoda-related discussion

Featured Replies

There was a discussion on today's You and Yours programme about the image of Skodas. It was sparked by the news that the Mayor of Lancaster has a Superb as his official car. You should still be able to hear the programme on the web site.

It seems quite a shrewd move to me. Mayor gets a classy car. Electorate think the council is being frugal by buying one, not realising that the list price for a Superb can be as high as

Mayor of Worthing has had one as his official car for a year or two now. And they don't usually buy them at list price, tend to lease them at a competitive rate for 3 years or so...

So what was the conclusion on the image discussion?

Nothing that would come as a surprise to anyone here. The presenter made a lot of the sort of remarks you'd expect and asked whether there'd be mayoral Ladas next. The mayor himself said it was a nice car but didn't do very much to state that it wasn't like the Skodas of old. I suspect he wants the local voters to think the car is cheaper than it is. They also interviewed Quentin Wilson who stated the obvious (VWs by another name) and went on to say that Skoda owners quite like demonstrating that they don't care about the old image.

I wonder how well the Mayor will get treated if his Superb goes wrong?

:soapbox:

Crimbo cheer to one and all, I'm off home at last! Have a good one Peeps

Chris

Be cool if the mayor joined the Forum :D

I thought they gave the skoda a pretty good report (although I think his last car was a stretch granada so couldnt be that hard to top that), and the bit about the owners of them was mainly saying we were shrewd

The same article was in the paper today. Apparently they got it very cheap. The local dealer gave it to them free for the first year and they liked it so much they bought it after that. 1.9 TDI I believe. The Granada got written off in some bizarre accident in a multi-story.

The trouble with Mayoral cars is that the are bought to sit around doing nothing most of the time.

At work our Chairman (as a District Council we don't have a Mayor but it's the same thing) uses a mini-cab

No seriously, we hire in a car whenever needed from a local limo firm (usually something like a Merc) but at the end of the day it is a Private Hire Vehicle aka a mini-cab!

This means we only pay for a car when it's being used

Blimey Mayor's in Skoda's, whatever next, Blair in a VRS....Nah on second thoughts, they are trying to get the image right, although I reckon if Lady Loki ever becomes one of Blair's aides, she might give it a go and rightly so. :mischievo

Talking of bizarre accidents and stranger than fiction anyone who knows Spinal Tap the movie knows that all their drummers died in bizzare gardening accidents.Strangely enough Jeff Porcaro the drummer from Toto, died doing his gardening when he had a massive heart attack. Life imitates art or is it real rock imitates spoof rock....hmmm

What has the last part to do with Skoda's? Frankly nothing but I don't care, so there...!! :1:

And it's on tonight. All the way to eleven...!

Blair in a vRS???

No but round here we have the Police in them! :cop1:

Hertfordshire Constabulary have recently aquired at least two (cos i've seen them parked together) vRS hatchbacks based in Stevenage.

They are liveried up in the full blue/yellow battenburg colours but otherwise look standard.

Interesting!!!

Blair in a vRS???

No, Spinal Tap. And you missed it.

No' date=' Spinal Tap. And you missed it.[/quote']

You can only miss something you wanted to watch!

As for mayoral cars, I am surprised more councils dont just hire a Limo when required, would seem to save money in the long run.

As for Mayors in Superbs, please must we stoop so low? Almost as bad as taxis, although I feel much better now as here in Medway I have seen 2 C class Mercs complete with taxi signage.

So you mean Octavia vRSes? These are quite popular as police cars aren't they? You certainly see them around Leicestershire.

I've also seen a couple of police Fabias in Leicester city centre.
