Using google maps

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a Skoda superb 2016 and have started using google maps via my iPhone and CarPlay rather than the internal satnav and finding it so much better. I would like to get the turn by turn directions onto the maxi dot display between the Speedo and the rev counter but don’t seem to get the option. Ive checked the system information screen and the device part no. Is 3v0035020b, software 0318, software version h25.14.38-high2-eu. I’ve looked around and the advice ranges from ‘can’t be done’ through to step by step instructions, which don’t work!

Can anyone help please.

Regards

Tony

Fairly certain it’s a nope

It’s a shame if it is! The in built satnav manages to have simple instructions separate to the map and google maps on the screen has simple instructions separate to the maps. I had hoped someone had managed replace these simple instructions, or indeed the native Skoda software worked out how to do it.

I can't see how there'd be any compatibility with an iPhone running Google Maps on iOS and whatever software the car uses.

My wife’s android phone does it on our kodiaq with MIB3 and colour MFD. my iPhone doesn’t. I think it’s an iPhone thing.

I’ve not tried Apple Maps. Maybe that does work.

In my trawl around the internet I found this

‘If you are using Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze via SmartLink/Android Auto/CarPlay, turn-by-turn navigation usually appears on the Maxidot, provided your MIB2 software version supports it (many later MIB2 units do, older ones might not). ’

And

  • On older Maxidot screens, you will typically only see arrow directions and distance, not the actual map visuals. (This what I’m looking for) If the arrows do not appear, it might require coding (using tools like VCDS or OBDeleven) to enable "Navi" output in the instrument cluster.

This raises the question, can I upgrade my MIB2 software (which I think I have) to allow what I’m looking for. Also I have no idea about VCDS or OBDeleven. They both feel beyond my skill set.

Does all of this help any of you to explain where I might go from here? Many thanks in advance if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Simply won't show with MY16 to MY19.

U already have MIB2 in ur MY16 Superb.

MIB2 does not show CarPlay or Android on the Maxidot.

Likewise, MIB2.5 does not show directions in the Maxidot.

Doesn't matter wat software/firmware the MIB2/2.5 unit is running.

I'm not sure about later models with the MIB3 units being able to do it on the virtual cluster.

No....u can't retrofit MIB3 on ur pre-facelift Superb.

I don’t get anything on facelift/MIB3 with digital display. Only thing that I can get is the internal satnav which will put the blue line on the map on the digital dash.

Not sure if CarPlay is affected, bit Android Auto is currently putting out issues where the 'turn by turn' display on the dashboard is not working if using Google Maps.

It does work via Waze though. Try Waze and see if it works, then you'll know if it's a Google Maps issue.

I am in 'discussions' with Google on this and they seem to think Android Auto is the cause, but I am repeatedly telling them it happened after a Google Maps update and that Waze works perfectly.

Hi Gax, thanks for this response. Which software version do you have on your car? I’ll certainly give Waze a try and maybe Apple Maps to see I can get somewhere with those on my phone.

Is that via an iPhone? You do get turn signals from Google Maps via Android Auto on the virtual cockpit with the MIB3

It is iPhone.

There might be turn signals that I haven’t looked for or seen in the various options for sure. Might have to have a play. Which view is that Dave?

It's the same one that's used for the Skoda nav, 'Route guidance'. It also overlays the next turn info from Google Maps over the Skoda map on the VC.

It only works on Android auto with google maps. Doesnt work on carplay with iphone unfortunately.

Will I be better off using Apple CarPlay, Apple Maps and an iPhone to achieve my goal of turn by turn directions (minimum turn arrows and distance) in the maxidot display of my MIB2 system in my Skoda Superb 2016?

Just to chime in.

I use two phones on my 69 Plate.

An iPhone 8 on iOS 14, Jailbroken so I can use CarBridge.

and an iPhone 17 on iOS 26 (Primary device)

The 17 displays turn information on the VC if I use Google Maps

The 8 does not.

@TonyElv Are you using an up to date iOS?

I’m currently on the latest iOS 26.2.1 and looking to get turn directions on small display between analogue speedo and rev counter. I don’t have VC.

Did u not read my post earlier?

Currently using iPhone SE with 26.2.1 and can get google maps onto main screen. Yet to try Apple Maps or Waze. Trying not to give up as the internal satnav manages to get information onto maxidot screen so I’m hoping there is still a way for external satnav systems do the same thing!
