Driving With A Faulty Wheel Bearing

Featured Replies

The wheel bearing on my car is loose and makes a horrible noise - Just wondering wether I can drive ths car to get it fixed + for the next week

or is it likely to get damamged / dangerous to drive if I dont get it fixed?

It sounds as if it is potentially dangerous in its present condition as well as being an MOT fail. See here:

I drove with a groaning rear wheel bearing for a month and had no problems. It really depends on how bad it is - which, is very difficult for us to tell.

I bit groany is OK, so long as it doesn't get F'hot.

Describing it as "loose" is very worrying. If the wheel's wobbling all over the place, I'd think twice about driving it anymore than you have to. i.e. to the garage (local) to get it fixed.

If it siezes, you will realise just how dangerous it is as you skid uncontrollably into an mpv full of children.

Front or rear?

Bit worrying when roller bearings are loose.

It as front and I agree its not ideal

if its loose to the point of wobble it will most likely cause the pads to be knocked back leaving you with a "long" brake pedal , so not really safe to drive

Mine was just noisy but I still made a point of getting it sorted asap.

Pretty much thinking along these lines: if it ceases and locks I will fly off the road. If it ceases and snaps off, the wheel will probably do something nasty too, in turn locking/flying off = me off road uncontrolled.

Best case you walk away, nobody hurt. Worst case is a lot worse :(

Hopefully it can be sorted under warranty, shouldn't take too long to do either, IIRC it took my local garage about 4 hours but that was slicing it in around other work as I desparately needed the car back that day.
