Featured Replies

Hi this is my first post so apologies if I get it wrong

On my 1998 Skoda Felicia 1.3 I’m having some sort of fuelling issue (maybe??) the car runs very lean and a sort of Black smoke from exhaust, after letting it warm up it absolutely stinks of petrol and I’m not really sure what it could be?

Thanks

Its the 1.3 multi point injection

1) Scanner (for error codes) ?

What's the status of:

2) spark plugs-air filter-fuel injectors-fuel filter?

3) ignition coil test?

Same gasoline station all the time?

Have you changed the ECU?

Catalyst converter and Lambda sensor is the original?

Hi, welcome. You kinda asked a sort of how long is a bit of string question some much more information is required as we don't know your particular car and if it's factory standard or as many cars of this age changes and other non-factory parts fitted.

Black smoke is usually over rich plus it stinks of petrol.

What is the use, or lack of use, of the car and its service maintence and repair history particularly in recent years?

There are lots on threads and posts on here with those new to these old cars and fueling, engine and other car issues and diagnois, suggestions, experience and information.

Black smoke and smell of petrol is either too much fuel or not enough air. I would get it scanned as previously said to help hopefully pinpoint problem. It could be quite a few things. If the air filter is old/dirty I would start by changing it first. It could also be bad MAF,O2 sensor, Bad fuel injector or failing ignition causing misfire and probably a few more hence why its better to get it scanned for codes.

Alasdair

This is an old car so the scan results show less than with more modern cars but still worthwhile doing if available but with bearing in mind, old or new car, a scan tool is just one diagnostic tool and often doesn't give direct indications so as alaways results must be firther checked and cross referenced to be confirm and to help with further diagnois.

Diagnois tools include your eyes, ears, even nose and mouth (smells) as well as using your brain and common sense which would cover the good ideas cover by the other posters.
