Octavia 2 egr valve problems

Featured Replies

Hi, I've just bought my first Octavia, it's on 90000 miles and has the 2.0 tdi. It started showing an engine fault on the way home. I plugged it into a reader and it said an egr valve issue.

Could this be a simple issue of just needing a clean or should I change it or delete it?

Cheers guys

Could be failing diaphram but more likely gunged up with oily gunk. My 1.9tdi had EML on/limo mode and fault code for EGR. When I took it off there was so much black gunk it was stuck solid. Cleaned it and no more problems. On the 1.9tdi there is an EGR cooler with another plastic vacuum operated valve. Not sure on the 2.0tdi but on my old Seat with same engine had same code for bad EGR but it was the plastic one on the EGR cooler that was causing code as it was sticking. From memory insufficient EGR flow.

Have you seen where it's located?

If it's the EA189 engine family, they're not exactly in a position to make anything 'simple'.

I have since realised where it is yes haha. Currently I fancy just getting rid of it since I'd rather not deal with it later on. Any reason not to?

Thanks for the responses as well

Should fail MOT without, but might require quite a thorough tester to spot it.

You can get an emulator which plugs into a couple of places and keeps engine management quiet.

All a bit illegal, of course.

Might also result in DPF problems if engine management isn't fooled.

Years ago I blanked mine on my old toyota and had no problems without any ecu adaptation. Not sure if its possible with skoda engines/ecu unless theres a software change in the ECU. On my 1.9tdi bxe its on the top of the engine at rear . Still not brilliant access to get at securing bolts but doable. I take it on the 2.0tdi its hidden somewhere.

To be honest, “getting rid of it” won’t necessarily leave your engine trouble free. The main issue is finding someone who fully understands the issue.

It’s possible just a blocked pipe, or yet again much worse.

I’d find someone who defiantly has the knowledge and ability to resolve it properly.

Just removing the DPF May not resolve the issue at all.

Occasionally if you’re very lucky a 1 hour run out at 2,000 revs constant can resolve the issue. I would try this first.

This issue is normally down to lots of short runs and no long running combined with poor maintenance.

Have a look at baz merideth, on Utube

You could try a tank of supreme diesel and some additive like wyns or forte egr cleaner. It may help.

^ Wildly optimistic.

Fair comment Pete. Cant do any harm though.

Admittedly mine is the 1.9 but I clean it out every now and then though never found much gunge in it despite the lack of long runs. If the car is otherwise good maybe worth cleaning or a mechanic may know of common issues.
