Motecarlo, 1.2TSI 105hp 2014 Timing chain tensioner failed

Featured Replies

Hi, My tensioner failed at low revs and speed, the car juddered and stalled. It restarted and I drove home about a mile steadily. It seemed to drive normally if a little noisy. Next day it would start but not run. The check engine light was on. Pretty sure the Timing jumped a tooth.

Q. do the valves always hit the pistons?

do the valves always bend?

Might I get away with an new tensioner and re-time?

TIA

Hello, welcome to the forum.

Definitely recommend you do not drive vehicle any further until cause found and fixed.

You may have been very lucky in not damaging the valves or pistons.

Not sure if the 1.2TSI is an interference engine, but it quite possibly is.

Have you posted this in the correct section?

What engine (type) do you have? If your engine is a post 2011 1.2TSI, EA211, your engine has a timing belt - not chain.

Motecarlo, 1.2TSI 105hp 2014. I understand there are 2 engine types in this model year. How do I identify mine? Are they both belt engines?

Car is not being driven.

Chain engines can usually be distinguished fairly readily by the chain cover being sealed (because it has to keep oil inside).

Belt engines have looser fitting, unsealed timing covers.

What year is vehicle?

Is it 3 or 4 cylinder?

You can find engine type on your V5 document as the first 3 or 4 characters of the engine number and should also be listed on the B pillar label.

CBZBE FROM V5 so it is cam chain engine

I think a single-tooth skip might not be catastrophic on that, but I'm not sure.

Whereabouts are you based?

There's an inexpensive timing tool kit that could be used to check the current situation, but it needs a little effort and raising the car a bit off the deck to fit the crank tool.

My cheap ODB reader says no codes??? Based Wiltshire.

I guess that looks encouraging, but if the check engine light was on, a code should have been stored.

What made you think the tensioner failed?

I could lend you the timing tool kit and potentially some help to use it if you're not too far from Highworth.

Shall I start a PM chat with you?

That's very kind of you Pete. I think the tensioner failed and it jumped a tooth because of the way it juddered to a halt. Tensioner failure is a known issue on these and its approaching 90,000mls. I've asked my garage for a quote then I'll make a decision.

The check light prob came on because the ECU noticed a mismatch.
