Lower tyre pressures to improve ride?

Featured Replies

I'm very happy with my Mk.SEL except for the somewhat harsh ride. Previous VW's had a 'comfort' setting for tyre pressures so would it be sensible to reduce the presures on the 16" tyres by about 4psi from the normal settings of 37psi/ 40psi ? I'd be very grateful for comments.

Those pressures on 16" wheels sound more like 'Eco' setting to me - do you have the tyre pressure label inside the fuel flap?

They seem a bit high. Thought it was 30/30 for normal load and 33/38 for heavy.

Thanks for the replies. The pressure information sticker is on the rear wheel arch and can be read by opening the rear dor on the driver's side (UK). The pressures are only given in Bars/Kpa as follows -

All wheel sizes, both front and rear with light load (i.e driver and passenger) = 2.5 bars (36psi)

All wheel sizes with full load (i.e driver, four passengers/full luggage) Front = 2.7 bars (39psi). Rear = 3.4 bars (49psi)!

This 2=page forum discussion (that began in April 2024 and concluded in November 2025) may be worth wading through.

It really shouldn't be that harsh at the pressures you're running on 16s - is this car new?

@bertJ You have the car and can easily drop the pressures and see what you think. (Reset TPMS), & increase as and when you want or need to. Just do not go too low.

If the car is new, there is a possibility that the transit blocks were not removed during the PDI - appears to be a far too common oversight.

The 'car info' on @bertJ's forum Profile is unhelpful, but the content of his earlier postings indicates that his Fabia is a Mk 4 SE L model that was brand-new in mid-2025. He bought the car in late-2025 when the vehicle was 6-months old and had a mileage of 700.

In the 2024/2025 forum topic I provided a link to in my yesterday's posting, owners of Fabia Mk 4 models observed that Skoda's recommended 'normal load' 2.5bar (36.25psi) inflation-pressures for the Fabia's front and rear tyres (15"/16"/17"/18" wheels) was unusually high (for a small 'family' hatchback car) and, consequently, translated to a firm/harsh ride quality - which is definitely the case for my own Fabia Mk4 SE L on some of the UK's badly-surfaced roads.

In the final posting of the 2024/2025 forum topic I said

...The recommended pressures are indeed high, but that does not mean they are somehow wrong and, if Fabia Mk 4 owners choose to use lower pressures, there is nothing to prevent them doing so.

If driving on UK's poorly maintained roads at UK legal speeds, reducing the sticker pressures by 0.2/0.3 bar (3 to 4psi) should be fine, but, if I were regularly cruising a Fabia Monte Carlo at 200kmh on a German unrestricted autobahn, I'd definitely choose to use the sticker pressures....

I echo Evolution13's advice, but I suspect that - to produce a really significantly softer ride on UK roads - a drop in pressure to at least 2.0bar/29psi (front and rear wheels) would be required.

The recommended inflation-pressures for my 2009 Skoda Roomster's 15" tyres are 2.2bar/32psi (front) and 2.1bar/30psi (rear) and, when the pressures naturally drop over time or in cold weather by (say) 0.2bar/3psi, I can (usually) notice the difference when I begin to drive the Roomster on roads I'm very familiar with. But my 2024 Fabia's ride (at the 2.5bar tyre pressures) is noticeably firmer than the Roomster's and (although I haven't experimented) I'm pretty sure I'd need to reduce the Fabia's pressures well down to make a major ride-quality difference.
