I would like some advice feedback. I just had my 3rd major service for my 2023 Skoda Octavia VRS and noticed that this time they used 0w-20 oil but the previous they used 0w-30w oil. According to my understanding the oil recommended for the tsi engine is 0w-20 to its thinner viscosity meeting emissions regulations and being better for the turbo engines under heavy loads than the 0w-30 which has a thicker viscosity. Thankfully i don't place much load on the engine, apart for loading the car for a 10+ hour trip I've never towed nor have a stressed the engine much with heavy driving maintained revs above 4,000 rpm for prolonged time and the oil temperature had never exceeded from memory above 112c if that. I also have the oil changed in-between the major services at about every 7,500 kms. With all info above Is it an issue seeing that the previous times they put in 0w - 30 and now 0w - 20. Should i bring it up with them.

At each service mine has had 0w-20 long life oil(508 00 compliant), with the variable interval scheme (up to 20,000 miles or two years). It’s now at 75,000 miles and running sweetly.

OK it’s not a VRS, a 1.5tsi manual 150ps, so a less powerful engine but the 0w-20 seems absolutely fine.

VW504 00 / 507 00 0w 30 FS III is just perfect for your 2.0 TSI. No need for the VW508 00 / 509 000 0w 20 FS IV that VW Group / Skoda went with for the WLTP Results (RDE2) in the EU / Europe regardless of it being the best for engines long long life. Australia has nothing to do with The World Wide Harmonised Testing that is not Real World Driving testing / emissions. Or even trusted around the whole world. 0w 30 FS better for the engine at higher temperatures than the 0w 20 FS.

Thanks for your input. So for your 1.5 the 0w-20 worked well. Interesting. I guess I'm just a bit confused with why they used one then for the last switched. Thanks as well for the links. I'll have a look at them when I get the time

The UK is normal not known normally for extremes of weather be it heat or cold and the national speed limit and motorway speeds are quite low. No reason with a small capacity and power engine that their favoured oil to recommend should not be OK, and only with some a bit high as far as oil consumption goes. As it is when doing Fixed Oil & Filter services there is no reason that not Long Life Oil can be used with a Petrol, as long as low SAP,s.

Thanks for your response. Let me get this straight, correct me if I'm wrong. 0w-30 is perfect and no need for the 0w-20 as 0W-30 is best for high temperatures heavy loads and i believe i understand this, though to date my temps don't rise that high i don't overload the car, but what about the point that 0w-30 is too viscous and under high load, as it's thicker oil might not flow as quickly to critical turbocharger bearings as designed and that 0w-20 is better for that purpose.

Ok so for Australia 0w-20 isn't required as it based on WLTP Results (RDE2) in the EU / Europe and Australia isn't Europe so has nothing to do with this testing. So 0w-30 is best even though in the second table for my engine 2.0 I/180 kW TSI VW 508 which in the top table specifies to use the 0w-20

You turbo is getting lubricated perfectly well even if it is 5w 30 FS III. They were lubricated with that for many years, or even with 5w 40 FS when Long Life oil was not used.

Interesting. On my MY23 1.4TSI I haven't done any intermediate oil changes since I'm covering well below average kilometers in this particular car, only completed the dealer services as per annual schedule. I looked back on the invoices for the three services so far and the first one shows Valvoline Longlife 0w-30 was used. The following two services show VL again but no viscosity rating specified, so I don't know which they used. Anyhow, it's prompted me to ask when due for service again at the end of the year. Label under the bonnet specifies VW 508 00, so maybe they all have the same label regardless of region? My previous mk7 Golf was the same.
