Metallic rattle when going over potholes

Featured Replies

Have a listen to the audio & share your thoughts.

I've replaced both wishbones & anti role bars a couple of months ago. This rattle started about a week ago & is progressively getting worse. The right hand tyres is wearing on the edges, both inside & outside. Turning the teering wheel on a flat road doesn't create the sound. Only when driving over drains or potholes.

I've had on ramps and had the wheel off. I can't see anything obvious

Sounds like a loose top mount/suspension nut. Had similar on my octavia when I changed springs and didnt manage to tighten top securing nut enough. or the top mount has failed which may explain the tyre wear. Doesnt sound like drop links or heat shield for exhaust or bottom ball joint although have had bad drop links which seem ok until removed. Reckon the tension from anti roll bar stops you seeing any play. As your replaced check the antiroll bar bushes bolts and also the bushes encased in alloy for the front swing arms etc.. havent come loose.

Thanks for all your suggestions - appreciated. I got a big lad to bounce the car whilst I looked @ the top mounts, little movement & equal both sides. there's no play felt through the steering wheel, which makes me rule-out track rod end??. But something is causing the R tyre to scrub both sides. Left is normal.
... Now looking at all my typos, I really must write these posts a bit slower:

It's easy to spend quite a bit of effort and cash replacing suspension bits only to eventually notice that an exhaust heatshield has corroded off one or two of its fixings somewhere near the front.

Hi Breezy_Pete,

Thanks for you thoughts - appreciated.

One of my first thoughts were; that this might be the case.
Whilst up on the ramps I checked the heatshields, nothing found.
It's a much more of a metal to metal bouncing sound.

Have a look at the spring on right hand side. It may have broken at top or bottom. Sometimes its difficult to see if its a small section thats gone. In my case was the rear and the spring wasnt seating properly and chattering when I hit bumps in road including the broken end which was bouncing around in lower socket that spring sits in. As said check the top strut nut as well. Mine was just slightly loose and it made a high pitch chattering sound. Couldnt see any play due to spring tension. If the spring is broken it may be puting front wheel out of alignment,

Solved: clunking from the front suspension turned out to be the bottom nut on the anti-roll bar/drop link. It wasn’t obvious when everything was bolted together because the joint was still being held under load, so the play was effectively hidden. Once I undid the top nut, the anti-roll bar/drop link could move freely and the fault became clear. If you have a metallic clunk or boing over bumps, it’s worth checking the anti-roll bar nuts are tight. Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions.

I had similar problem. Upper nut of sway bar link. I went to garage and after 4 hours they did not find it and gave me car back (45 pounds)

I discovered it myself by chance after two weeks dismantling things after work 16oo-18oo. Now I know that checking swaybar link pathetic solution in Skoda is time interval service like oil change.
